And you thought Ryanair were at it?

Postby Mowser » Sun Jun 16, 2013 12:17 pm

Thomson and First Choice have become the first travel agents in the UK to charge passengers to sit next to each other on flights - including honeymooning couples.

Guaranteed seats together cost £7.50 per seat for each flight, adding up to an extra £30 for a couple on return flights.

They are not the first. If you want to guarantee sitting beside someone else on EasyJet and Ryanair and you don't want to pay priority or Speedy boarding and you don't want to be first in the queue, then you pre-book your seats; at a cost. What's wrong with that, it makes good business sense to me.

Nothing wrong with it at all. I always fly Ryanair where possible. I posted it as some people here like to slag off Ryanair.

We have never booked seats/speedy boarding etc total waste of money as far as we are concerned. After all at most it's only a 3 hour flight. It's 3 hours peace lol.

How much extra do you have to pay to ensure that you can avoid sitting next to someone?

Or some body type! My daughter suffered on an Air Caraibes flight, which was completely full, from French Guyana to Paris with a 25 stone woman overflowing into her seat. Not an experience I would savour.

Imagine if everybody on the flight booked speedy boarding. :(

We like speedy boarding for several reasons - I do like to sit by OH, I like to put our carry on luggage in the compartment above us (later arrivals sometimes struggle to find space) and I find I am often agog with horror at the bedlam that goes on with people getting seated. I'd rather sit and watch 'em all than be in the tbroes of it :D

We flew with Vueling recently and they have a choice of three differently priced tickets. The basic is just that, the next level up that we went for, it includes a 22kg case plus the usual carry on, instant check in, a seat which you can change if you don't like where it is (subject to seats being available.), alter the dates etc. The third level is a silly price, can't imagine who would use that. Katy? All worked well, especially from the UK end, but in true Spanish fashion, the check in opened 35 minutes late and the instant check in wasn't instant, in fact the desk wasn't even open. There are posters telling you to use the instant check in, if only it existed. :D Not cheap, but pleasant enough as flights go.

The holiday companies have been charging that way on long haul flights for quite a long time now, I didn't know it didn't apply to short haul package tours.

Not quite the same but...

Being cheeky devils, we often book the aisle & window seats & hope that no-one gets put in the middle (yes, I know this annoys some of you  )

Jet2 have twigged this fairly common practice, and now if you try this trick, you get charged £5 for the 'empty' seat

Fair do's , I suppose... :lolno:

A fiver well spent I'd have thought - as long as the seat is empty.
