I'll second the idea of collecting from the returns desk. We occasionally hire a car for a few days if ours if off the road, and always select Malaga airport for pickup. You can't physically get to the inside desks unless you're arriving on a flight, so they have to have some other system. Never had to queue at all, although the first time I had terrible trouble finding Record's desk. But since I only paid 11 euros for 3 days, with no excess, and full/full cos it was less than 4 days, I didn't mind.
