Are there less flights from EasyJet /Ryanair?

Postby concorde » Sat Feb 07, 2015 12:56 am

Ive just been browsing for mid April flights from our usual U.K. Airport, Liverpool.

Tried Ryanair and got our usual early morning flight to Malaga, however from Malaga there is only one midday flight per day. That is very unusual as we always choose to get the flight arriving back in U.K. at midnight.

Thought I'd give EasyJet a look and the return leg from Malaga was surprisingly cheaper, but again instead of their late night flight, there is only one flight at 10.30a.m.

I know flights change throughout the months as do prices but it does seem strange that both airlines who normally have at least a few choices per day have dropped to one at a quite busy time of the year.

Anyone have any ideas?

I still had choice for 15th April, Ryanair, Malaga East Midlands. I would have thought Liverpool would be equally busy.

I've just checked Ryanair flights up to the middle of July and there is still only one flight per day to Malaga from Liverpool and the same from Malaga to Liverpool.
I'm hoping to have an on-line chat with Ryanair tomorrow, I'm still puzzled why there is only that one flight per day, I've also e-mailed EasyJet the same question.

Could be a lack of passengers, higher costs at Malaga airport, arriving too late at Liverpool with the late evening flights. Who knows?

It's a business model. Supply and demand. Create the demand. Diversify your supply. Demand remains. Supply reduced. Flight occupancy increases. Perfect.

It used to be common practice, probably still is, for airlines to cut back on the sunshine flights in the winter and use the aircraft for the ski flights as demand for them was higher.

I think that is partly true, but Ryanair have significantly reduced their summer flights to the United Kingdom from Malaga this year. Their overall number of destinations has increased but not in line with the increase in the number of new aircraft. So the new routes have to come from somewhere. There algorithm is unfathomable.

Actually had an on-line chat with Ryanair today, not much they could tell me really except that is their Schedule Dpt. that sorts the flights etc out but I could e-mail them to try and find out more.

Also got a reply from EasyJet, giving me same spiel, I replied and said I couldn't work out why both airlines would stop the late flights and surely if one stopped then the other would surely mop up the others passengers. Can't see O'Leary missing that trick!
Seems madness when they both fly to and from the same airport.

There is definitely some reason that I can't quite fathom out.

It's Granada airport that needs a budget airline to start again, and hopefully flying from North of London!

I've just checked the Leeds flights for summer, and there are less than last year. There is only one flight into Leeds a day, and it lands at midnight. Concorde, I'll happily swap you for liverpool! Hate very late flights

Some changes are for the better. Looking at flights this summer to Prestwick and they are morning flights. Better than previously when they landed after the last train to Glasgow had gone.

Hi Alison,
Since Granada airport is no longer an option for us, for now anyway, a very early outward bound flight and very late home bound one works best for us, nice quiet roads in the U.K. both ways and at the Malaga end the choice of a bus to Granada from the airport or being picked up by friends, although for them a 3 hr round trip.

I did hear that Granada were looking into courting other airlines from other countries to fly into the airport, my friends now fly from Granada to London City with B.A and they love it.

We used to like flying from Granada but london too far to travel. One solution at Leeds is that there is a travelodge right on the airport so we can stay overnight and set off next day. It does effectively make the flights more expensive though

Thought this might interest a few
From December 2014

Eight companies to refloat an airport
The Granada airport is contacting these eight companies to increase the number of international destinations
Last Friday the Ideal paper in Granada, published the AENA (Spanish Airports Authority) had decided to lower the landing charges at the Federíco García Lorca (Granada –Jaén) airport in an effort to expand services and they are going to contact two British, one Spanish, one Italian, two German, one Turkish and one French.

British Airways
It started to operate flights between Granada and London City on July 25 2013. Last summer the frequency was five days a week, but now in winter the number is down to two. Buying a ticket a month in advance costs between 120 and 140 €. During this year average occupancy was 75%, but more promotion needs to be done over the winter.

Jet2.com
A low-cost British airline which currently only operates in Andalucía out of Málaga. It’s only hub outside the UK is in Alicante and Granada is interested in this airline for the destinations of Belfast, Blackpool, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle.

Volotea
Spanish company with headquarters in Barcelona which has already flown to Granada in the summer of 2012, with two flights a week to Ibiza and Menorca. The airline concentrates on Mediterranean destinations with France, Italy and Greece with the highest frequency. Granada is interested in this airline flying to Venice, Naples, Palermo and Bordeaux.

Meridiana
A low-cost Italian airline which has shown an interest in Granada, it has its central hub in Olbia, on the island of Sardinia. Granada looks for Cagliari, Milan and Verona.

Germania
Founded in 1978, is based in Berlin and possible connections with Granada are the German capital, Bremen, Düsseldorf and Erfurt-Weimar.

SunExpress
This Turkish airline with a base in Antalya specialises in flights to Germany. Among the destinations Granada is interested in, one stands out Munich.

Germanwings
Low-cost German airline with a base in Cologne/Bonn and inside Andalucía it already flies to Málaga and Jerez de la Frontera. It has destinations all over Europe, but Granada is interested in Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Hannover and Stuttgart.

Transvia.com
Franco-Dutch company which operated between Granada and Paris from October 2007 to 2012. Currently in Andalucía it flies to Almería, Jerez de la Frontera, Málaga and Sevilla. Granada wants to recover the link to Paris.

Meant to add to that post

Why haven't they contacted EasyJet?
Also they need to get their fact straight about Jet2.com, Blackpool airport had already shut, they ran a rubbish service there anyway, from May until the end of September and the price of flights was way over priced

Ryanair seem to change things all the time, usually for the worse !

The Gatwick flight to Seville used to get in around 7.30-7.45pm from memory. Looking at their schedule recently ( and they do not fly until April ), it is now getting into Seville about midnight. Too late to travel on by train say.

anyroads, we always meant to fly to Seville from Liverpool, have a few days there then get the train or bus back to our house near Granada.
However when Ryanair pulled out of Granada, they also stopped flying to Seville.
Our loss, but there is a flight to Seville from Manchester.

Good old Iberia fly there, however there is 1 stop, at Gatwick for 5hrs and 30mins!
So, leaving Manchester at 8.40am and landing in Seville at 7.10pm, unbelievable!

We did go to Seville though, train from Granada, used the Tarjeta Ora, got 40% off fare, had an amazing stay in a converted convent next to the Cathedral for peanuts, loved Seville and would go back again and again.
