Any providers of Travel Insurance to Spain despite the FCO advise?

Postby slapdash » Thu Jul 30, 2020 3:00 pm

Are there any providers of Travel Insurance to Spain where cover is still in place despite the UK FCO advise "for non essential travel to Spain" issued on 25 July 20?

The FCO advice means most UK Travel Insurance now will be invalidated if you travel to Spain

I have found 2 providers in the UK, who are still prepared to provide cover despite the FCO advise:
https://www.battleface.com/ but this only includes travellers up to the age of 59
https://www.warzonecover.com/

Does anyone know of any other providers?

More specifically to this forum, are there any Travel Insurers based in Spain or the wider EU, that anyone can recommend, that could provide travel insurance to UK citizens/residents who need to visit Spain? Presumably EU/Spanish Insurers would not be contrained by the "non essential travel advice" issued by the FCO and UK Government.

Thanks in advance for any information

You may find that Spanish travel insurance that does cover UK citizens will not cover you whilst in Spain. I use Staysure as it is one that covers British who are Spanish residents, but it does not cover medical care within Spain. I think you would need to stick to a UK based company if you are UK resident. I saw Battleface mentioned in a Telegraph article the other day. You would still have EHIC cover presumably?

Get out clauses in 99% of Uk insurers re Covid 19. If you find an insurer it may well be very expensive.

This is only my opinion but I would not trust any insurance company to pay up for any thing any where, any time in the foreseeable future you can be absolutely certain that they will take your money but getting them to pay up will be another matter, as I said only my opinion !

Completely agree with you AL, they are all the same, in it to make money and they will do whatever to avoid paying it out.

Business as usual then :lolno: I only took out insurance as I had to for a cruise last year and Staysure were reasonably priced and covered British who were resident in Spain. I renewed it in early February and already it had clear Covid19 exclusions.

I have now found Travel Insurance to Spain via Campbell Irvine Insurance despite the FCO advice.

https://www.campbellirvinedirect.com/CIDirect/
Look under Further Information/ Travel Against FCO Advice/ then on 3rd line from bottom "Please click here to download an application". Fill out the Specialist Travel Insurance Application Form and return via email.

The main exclusions are:
Please note however, that whilst the policy provides cover for the reasons for which the Foreign Office are advising against travel (other than for claims in relation to Coronavirus which is specifically excluded) it would not extend to include cancellation cover should you wish not to travel in the event that the situation deteriorates nor would there be cover for any non-medical evacuation.
Therefore it will cover Non-Covid medical emergencies and repatriation eg car accident etc.

Alternatively it was just reported in El Pais on 05/08/20 that:
https://english.elpais.com/spanish_news ... spain.html
the regional government of the Canary Islands has announced that it will cover all coronavirus-related costs of visitors to the archipelago who contract the disease, regardless of whether they are Spaniards or citizens of other countries.

Under the terms of the insurance deal struck by regional authorities with AXA España for €450,000, any tourist who tests positive for Covid-19 during their stay in the Canaries will be eligible for free medical treatment, travel assistance, repatriation and additional accommodation due to mandatory quarantine measures.

Only visitors with no prior knowledge that they were Covid-19 positive will be eligible, and the policy will only be activated if the tourist does not have any personal insurance to cover the costs.
This would seem to get around the FCO issue of not having Travel Insurance if going to the Canaries. It will be interesting if it is also adopted for mainland Spain too.

Yes I've used Staysure and my total policy cost for 1 year was about £39.50 or so (but I am under 40....just!). You ARE NOT covered for illnesses relating to covid (your EHIC will cover you...for now!), but you ARE covered for anything else, theft, injury etc.
