Won't please los Linenses. Some made a living from going in and out all day with cartons of cigarettes to supply the Kiosks. Not good for the High Street shops either.

Im going over to Gib tomorrow on the way back from the costa de la luz. The borders as normal at the mo. If everything's agreed the land border will go in the near future but there can still be random checks as is with norway and sweden interms of what you can bring, ie food stuffs

The pertinent bits of the article as regards the border are

Customs union. The future treaty will include a “bespoke solution” based on adapting the EU’s customs union to Gibraltar, which had been excluded from the border-free zone until now. The customs checkpoint at La Verja will be eliminated, but there will be a need for safeguards to avoid distortion in the internal market, particularly in the economy of the nearby Spanish region of Andalusia. To that effect, Gibraltar will have to apply “substantially” the same duties and trade policy measures as the EU, which includes customs, excise and value-added tax legislation, prohibitions and restrictions for security reasons, and sharing reliable statistics on its imports with the EU.

Tobacco. The document discusses excise duties for “sensitive products” (tobacco, alcohol and fuel) and the need to adopt measures that will guarantee a level playing field and “ensure the traceability of tobacco products.” The document calls for administrative agreements between Spain and Gibraltar authorities to develop mutual cooperation in this area.

So yes the tobacco smuggling will go and the high street shops in Gib selling tobacco and Alcohol will take a huge hit. Hence there will be no need for any checks as things will be the same prices and the same rules will apply on each side of the border. There can be token random checks but there will be nothing worth smuggling anymore.

I wonder how the Gibraltarians will take it when cigarettes increase, what benefit will the average person get in exchange. Marlborough are about £3.30 per pack now. Other EU countries are able to implement their own taxes on Alcohol and cigarettes.

It is the price that Gibraltar has to pay in exchange for keeping the border open after they were thrown under the bus. The alternative is long queues and intermittent closure of the border and the economy totally ruined.

It is reckoned based on imports that Gibraltarians smoke about 40,000 cigarettes per year each! Maybe they will cut down to 3 packets a day!

Wouldn’t be great for the economy of La Linea and Algeciras etc either. Although many of them may have lost their jobs already since Covid lockdown.

No, I was thinking of those 10 to 15 thousand Spaniards (insert your own figure) who work in Gibraltar.

They wouldn't of been effected if Spain and Gibraltar didn't get a deal. Gibraltar needs the labour so they will let them in and Spain will let them back across the border so there would have been no delays. The Spaniards coming back from work could come through the EU passports Channel whilst the Gibraltarians and other UK citizens would get delayed by the Spanish Immigration at the none EU citizens queue.

Went across the border this morn at 11.00 no que until the last turn as you drive upto the custom booths. Cars were coming into la linea though the same road (not the 7 lane standard one) as there were so few cars. Most cars were at least having their papers checked and one was been taken apart.either looking for something or training.

Coming bacķ out around 14.30 it was very busy.all 7 lanes and the queing started at the begining of the lanes. Guardia were pulling over maybe every 10th car some just papers other pulled over. So alot more checking than normal. We were stopped asked for passports and showed them and were waved on.no asking for resident papers or anything else. So i guess once uk people can fly to gib If its before non residents are allowed in they will prob chance their luck.they will be unlucky to be stoppped if its a busy day. Then got stuck queing for 30 mins in la linea as the gurdia were doing a roundabout checkpoint.by the time were got to see what was causing the delay they were just getting ready to drive off. Just what you want after queing to get out of Gib.

Morrisons is still struggling to fill shelves with certain products. Never seen it so quiet in there. Same with main street

Just spent 2 nights in conil de la frontera. Highly recommend. Beautiful place, stunning beaches.and a day trip to chiclana. Lovely aswell. You forget how beautiful the cadiz countryside is. So green and rolling hills. The view across to Morocco from the coast road mirador was stunning on such a clear morning on the drive back.

We stayed at hostal Ferriera. Via booking.com. cracking place. Stunning roof terrace. Right in the heart of town.with loads of bars around. So might be noisy when everything is open late but no probs due to the curfew. We had debated staying in chiclana but so glad we stayed in conil. It has a lovely relaxing small town vibe right on a typically stunning atlantic beach with lovely typically church squares.chiclana is a much bigger inland city but a really nice day trip that we really enjoyed. Talking to one of the tourist guides in conil he said they were struggling the same as everywhere and it was pretty quiet during the day compaired to a normal may. Lots of places only opening up fri and the weekend but still a large choice as there was so many there. Near to vejer de la frontera aswell via the motorway so i would recommend a visit there aswell if you havnt already seen it.. I just need another break to get over the always stressful gib "run" now!

The only good thing about gib has changed from been morrisons to being able to walk down the street without wearing a mask!! After a year or so it seems very odd seeing people walking around without them. Funny how it seems to have been drilled into you so much now that you feel odd without one and walking past others without. A nice bit of freedom!

So the border crossing is the same as pre Brexit for now?

It's interesting they didn't ask for residence papers or look to stamp your passport (I presume you have a British Passport). Maybe they only bother looking shortly after a flight has landed in Gibraltar. Or maybe because you were in a Spanish registered car they don't check if there was only 2 of you in the car?

Even at that if say you had a German passport and travelled from the UK you can get around the restrictions on people travelling from the UK by flying to Gibraltar and then walking across the border as there is no way for the Spanish authorities to know you were in the UK. Or does the UK stamp German passports when entering the UK now?

If you were not a resident and they hadn't stamped your UK passport then it could cause problems leaving Spain. They could say that if you have no stamp then you must have been here since prior to 31st Dec 2020.
No doubt we will read of such a situation in the Daily Mail.

Yes the border is the same. Well abit more strict with checking but its no different to before except what you can bring in interms of food stuffs. The road border is quite a small space. Theres 7 lanes that go down to one and its a squeeze as it goes down to one lane as you go around a sharp corner. In normal times the CNP hardly stop anyone. I think ive seen one hippy style van full of young men pulled once but i cant ever remember seeing any others. its pretty much a free for all,let alone stopping cars to properly check resident papers and stamp passports if required the spaniards wave their DNI's in the air as they race through. That gives you an idea of what its like. Its pretty unorganised.and most of the time the police are to busy chatting or on their phones to even bother looking up to see whos coming though. As we drove past the guardia as you come through 5 would stood in a circle chatting.

It will be far better if the schengen agreement goes through as the road border isnt the greatest anyway and tbh is pretty pointless interms of it being there to stop smuggling

I clicked on Wicksey’s link to the Border webcam yesterday afternoon and it was deserted, just 4 people on foot. Best to enter without the car, plenty of parking right outside the border and quicker. Buses are frequent into town.
