British Passports

Postby katy » Fri Jun 24, 2022 1:28 pm

Been reading a few times this year about waits for Passport applications including renewals. Daily Mail wrote it was taking an average of 10 weeks. When I went to Nice a few weeks ago I was concerned that mine had only a month left. I applied 8th June online. Had text messages on every step. Received, received old Passport, Application approved. gone to printers. Then yesterday out to deliverers. Text today TNT delivering. Arrived Midday with TNT. 2 weeks 2 days, not bad. Never believe the DM although we know that

that's very reassuring to hear... was it a 'normal' application or did you pay extra for any kind of express service?

A friend of mine applied online for an Irish passport on a Wednesday morning, here in the UK. Hit his doormat on the Friday morning, and from Dublin ! This was a year ago let me add. Two days is some going...

People can visit a passport office in the Uk and get a passport the same day but they need to have an appointment.Great if you live in an area with a passport office but not so great if you don't, the easiest thing is to apply on line and send the application to them.

One of the problems with British passports is that they handle applications from all over the world. Much in demand.

I think its 6 mnths costakid, or at least i keep seeing info telling people to have at least 6 mnths left on their passport, however the rule seems to indicate 3mnths.Quite confusing, always conflicting info.

afaik, residencia holders can get by with 3 month validity but otherwise UK passport holders need 6 months remaining. Ours had a Nov expiry and we were in UK so we decided to renew. Given the reported holdups, we went for online application and collection at Liverpool (the expensive one). TNT has a probably overall good pass-through but, if you're one of those who dumps into the cracks, not so much fun.

The online application (including a smartphone pic) seemed pretty well sorted to me whereas Mrs 1BL insisted on a professional studio chain who took several rubbish pics before finally getting the all-clear from the UKPO website. Anyhoo, we collected our passports in LPL as appointed on the day.

My wife will have 3 months left when we travel in September but we will only have a month to renew from our summer trip. I guess the expensive route of going to collect in person will be the safest option.

Some are being caught out if the passport expires after the normal 10 years as in Spain it’s only valid for 10 years even if the expiry date goes over that.

Yes that’s why I needed a new one. I had extra months but 10 years expired.

Anyone remember years ago when you could go to PO ang get one instantly. My Passpirt was damaged once and was flying to Malaga next day. Popped into PO next morning and got one to fly in afternoon.

My first one was that type. It was only valid for a year and made from paper.

I remember getting something like that for a day trip to France long before I got a proper passport. Those were the days. Despite being able to do everything online these days, things seem to take longer and are more complicated :eh:
