Gibraltar

Postby dangerman » Thu Sep 29, 2005 5:13 pm

Even though we´vfe been here for nearly two years, we´ve never visited.
Can anybody point me in the right direction, as to the best way to rectify this.
I´d like to go by car. Is it easy? We have a hire car, at present, which can´t be taken out of Spain (which I believe rules out driving into the place). Can you park up, before the border, and walk across?
Are there many hotels, there?

TIA

Pete :D

You haven´t really missed anything by not visiting Gibraltar!!!

Yes you can park the La Linea side and walk through customs. Pick a bus up the Gib side + it will take you up to Main Street.

The Rock and Caleta Palace (think thats correct) are the only 2 decent hotels.

A trip up the Rock by cable car is worth it for the views over to Tangiers and the caves are worth a visit. Don´t let one of the Main Street taxi drivers talk you into letting them take you up as their prices are a rip off; they are well known for telling people incorrectly that the cable car is closed down for the day and that taxi ride is the only way of reaching the summit.

Very few decent eating places around Main Street and many items in shops dearer than in UK. Cigarettes good value though.

I would agree with Brenda - visited once and that was more than enough!
The caves and the view are worth a visit but as for the rest.......we found it dirty and tatty and very poor for eating out, both in quality and price.

If you do drive there you most definitely DO NOT want to drive into Gib. Park on the Spanish side and walk.

Have fun.

There is an AC HOTEL in La Linea which has had some good reviews. Details are on their website. http://www.ac-hotels.com/ I would consider staying overnight at this hotel rather than in Gib itself. It is within walking distance of the 'border' and in a good position when driving into La Linea.

The small cemetery at the top of Main St is interesting most of the headstones are from the 18/19C some killed in the battle of Trafalgar. The best places to eat are down by the marina and the Rock Hotel is the best place to stay. It is scruffy but if you get away from the duty free shops there are some quaint back alleys. There is also the Botanical garden if you like that sort of thing.

Sacerellis (?) coffee shop has a great selection of beans and teas for sale and sometimes sells things from Fortnum and Mason, Thorntons chocolate etc.
