Who pays the IBI?

Having sold the house in May there was insufficient time for the transfer at the town Hall, consequently the IBI was sent to me. I was made aware this would happen. My question is what calendar period does the IBI cover? Should the new owners pay it all?

Yes........... here in Jaén there is a payment window September to November

Looking online it would appear whoever owns the house on 1st. Jan that year is responsible. That would be a bit difficult when the seller is long gone.
