Learning the lingo

Postby RichardCoeurdeLion » Thu Feb 22, 2007 4:18 pm

Allthough we only visit for a few weeks several times a year, we are trying to learn the language, and I managed to get my GCSE last summer. Grade A, not bad for an old un. We found a good method whilst in spain was to watch the evening news on TVE. On the film reports they put a short precis in caption form at the bottom of the screen, for a minute or so. You can get the gist from the film and check any unknown words as you go.

My wife and I are also learning Spanish. Its a night class and our teacher is an English lady who used to live and work in Spain.

Apparantly the BBC have a fantastic language website for free.

Here is the link:

If you are within reach of one, IMHO you cannot beat Insituto Cervantes - a government-supported organisation, tasked to spread Spanish culture and language. The teachers are all Spanish, the whole of the lessons are in Spanish (the only way to learn), and they carefully grade students as they progress. Great value, great fun too!

Good luck - just keep trying and eventually you'll have a sudden flash of recognition that you're actually THINKING in Spanish - that's when you know you're cracking it! :D
