Thanks very much for that HB, bit scientific for a dunce like me, but seems to be what I was looking for.

1.5mm2 for lighting, 2.5mm2 for power and aircon. 4.0mm2 for a cooker or big aircon, 6.0mm2 for a ceramic hob, 10mm2 x 2 anti-halegeno (green plastic outer) supply cable and 10mm2 copper earth.

€70 a METRE.. he's taking the biscuit!!! its no more than €1 metre for 4mm2, probably more like 50c.

Got all the cabling I need for the apartment for €158. Bit of a relief! My man had a list of prices (computer printed) from some ferreteria for various materials. Included on the list was 6mm cable @ €71 / m. It would have cost me €1680 just to wire in the ceramic hob at that rate! He realised there was an error before I got back to him with my own quotes!
Thanks for your replies.

ferreteria?? thats an extra 50% on the prices, should of gone to a specialist wholesaler, but as they say, all good in hindsight. you did well. alot cheaper than he her would of charged you for it.

Torreluz, tiny wholesale shop directly opposite the bus station in Torremolinos, best prices around here. I buy the materials, my man does the work. Best that way!

cool i'll have to have a look in there at the prices, we normally buy in cartama or fuengerola, but have started using one in coin as they give a good price on cable.

The exact same thing happened to us in feb 2003 when we bought an apartment in fuengirola. We had been living there for nearly a year and a half, it was the same thing we paid our electricty (which the estate agent put in our name) but not the meter :? which was strange (and we were unaware). I was sick at the time and the electric suddenly went off. My OH went out to see what was going on and a Spanish man was coming down the stairs with our meter. As you can imagine we were furious and he said contact sevianna (sp). Which we did and the woman there told us that we would have to pay them 750 euros for them to put our electric back on. Like you we had no outstanding bills. We said this has to be illegal, we have a child, its extortion etc and she shrugged her shoulders and simple said "this is Spain".....I should've packed my bags then.

That often happens. It is possible to change the payment details on a contract so that you can pay the bills from your account.

Unfortunately the contract stays in the name of the original applicant - usually the builder. When his contract is terminated because it is a builders supply and doesn't need a boletin the meter is removed and the contract terminated.

In these circumstances it is essential to make sure the contract, not just the direct debit, is in your name.

When I asked to change just the payment details recently (and not the contract details) I was told I can't any more, and you can't change the contract details without a valid boletin.

Thanks for all your replies, I just wanted anyone who had just bought or in the process of buying to know what could happen.
If I knew now I would ask my lawyer or estate agent let me know the implications of changing over the name on the electric contract, but thats great in hindsight.

All the other utilities have been okay and we haven't had any problems paying for them, we have direct debits set up for them.

My only other potential problem is the Rates, the property is 2 floors of apartments with double garages underneath, and all it belonged to all one person and he died so it all got split up between his family, the people who owned our bit lived in Barcelona and didn't want it, they only used it for a holiday home.
Our lawyer did say that we might get the bill for all the building last year, but fortunately the people in the other apartment got the lot so we just paid our share to them, I'm not sure what will happen this year, the other people might be crafty and try to change it for us to pay.

But I won't worry about that until it happens.

Just put an update to my situation re: boletin in the other thread on electic meters.

And just when you thought you understood the new rules, it now seems that from July 1 all meters must be the new digital ones and all the old ones - a mere 20 million - will have to be changed over to the new ones!

The good news is that the cost of changing them will be paid by the electricity companies - just 2 billion euros!

Watch your charges go up!
