Grapes, Mildew and Sulphur

Postby country boy » Mon May 21, 2007 1:29 pm

Might I ask if anyone knows what the blue powder that the Spanish liberally dust their tomatoes and grape vines with at this time of year is called, and is it for the dreaded Mildew ?

As we're discussing grapes....does anyone know which variety of grape is nice to eat. We are looking at buying some grape vines but are they all the same? :?

Also....does anyone know what the large trees are in Sevilla with purple blossom/flowers....very pretty :D

Try a Moscatel. We have a variety of grape vines and all do very well each year.

I have tried (unsuccessfully) to find a supplier here in Spain of seedless grape vines. You can get them mail order from the UK but obviously they wouldn't travel too well at this time of year! If anyone has seen seedless vines for sale anywhere in Andalucia please let me know where. Of course the Spanish quite rightly eat the pips as well as they are beneficial to your health - an aquired taste methinks.

I didn't realise that anyone didn't eat the pips. Interesting.

Don't know about grape pips but apple pips contain cyanide.and there was a case in the news years ago, about a guy who loved these, he saved up, goodness knows how many, ate the lot in one go and died of cyanide poisoning!

True or another urban myth?

Our grapes succumbed to mildew last year.
it is sulphur, and i dust my grapes with it too.
Is the sulphur readily available in garden centres?

Alan

We get ours from the local Agri store, normally cheaper than garden centres.

Thanks for the advice and the name of the blue blossom........next time we're in the garden centre we'll look out for the Moscatel. Not sure I would want to eat the pips?!

My old fella always told me not to eat grape pips, they'll give you gallstones and a thousand and one things not to do for fear of getting the dreaded piles.

Olive. A friend of mine says pipless grape vines are available here, I'll call him later and get the location for you.

Do you water the sulphur down or put it on the leaves dry?

Olive.

My friend got seedless vines at the garden centre in Puente don Manuel but thinks it may be a bit late in the year for them now. He seems to think they can be bought anywhere?

You can get soluble sulphur which you can spray of the powder which needs a "puffer".

The blue stuff referred to in an earlier post is not sulphur, it is a copper fungicide which is soluble and can be sprayed.

Thanks for that Sid. I dusted them last year but when I got back to the UK I convinced myself I should have diluted.
It was the box's of yellow sulphur I used.

Cheers,

Kenny

The jacarandas are all out in Sevilla at the moment. Beautiful.

It is in a 1kg blue box and it is called "COBRE KEY DOBLE". It contains soluble copper combined with a fungicide called "MANCOZEB".

It is especially recommended for spraying fruit trees and roses before they start shooting. It can also be watered in around the plants as it is systemic and absorbed by the plants.
