Trading a UK plated car in

Postby Pigeon Tim » Tue Jun 05, 2007 9:57 pm

Does anyone know if main dealers accept a UK plated car as a trade in?

More importantly, I presume it is a RHD car? In which case I would doubt if any Main Dealer would be interested. What would they do with it apart from scrap?

There is a company in the sur advertising for rhd cars. i would think the price you would get would be very low considering they have to transport them back to the uk and also get a profit.

Someone I know is returning to the UK, husband died 4 years ago and she doesn't drive. She still has the car, a Golf estate and only done 9000 miles! Still UK plates, I offered to drive her back in it but not sure of the implications, it only has the old log book and when I checked it out it on DVLC it is listed as "exported" What to do?

Easy peasy- just 're-import' it to the UK. It will be a lot easier than importing a car to Spain and a lot less costly as the tax would have already been paid in the UK when 1st registered and you would only have to pay the registration fee (about £30 if memory serves correct) and the MOT fee and it will more than likely keep its original registration number.

Spot on what Malagaman says and the sensible thing to do, but I think Katy is possibly wondering about the implications of her doing the drive back in the car with no MOT and therefore void insurance.

you can have a car shipped back to the uk for around 500-700 euros....I think that by the time you take into account, petrol, tolls, ferry time costs etc, that shipping it is the most efficient way....

I think you're probably right. A friend of mine has just done Santander-Plymouth return with a normal vehicle and him the only occupant, at £472. I would guess that one way would be the best part of £300 + fuel, accomodation etc, and of course the added stress + the cost of a flight back, making shipping the car the best option

Katy, pm me the details, i may have a buyer. The first registration fee has just gone up to £50, they have also altered the rules for re-importing vehicles aswell.

Seriously speaking I had absolutely no problem whatsoever selling my first 2 RHD UK plated cars over there to Brits living in the campo...seriously no problem and they went for a proper UK price.

In fact if we were to make the move across and we needed money I'd ressurect a past business and sell them for a living.........a lot of people actually prefer RHD over there contrarary to belief.

Further more this car we have now is RHD but fully matriculated and each time we visit I'm asked if I'll sell it and it's nothing special, just a holiday small 4x4.

Get a for sale sign on it.

The Golf only has the old log book though so it would not be possible to put it on spanish plates, suppose it's stateless really :)

My father is moving over in a few weeks. Because things happened so quickly, he's bringing his car with him and hoping to sell it on, before buying a LHD 4x4 when he gets here.

His car is a RHD Vauxhall Vectra Saloon, 2.2 petrol engine, nearly 3 years old but in superb condition and quite low mileage. Has all the right paperwork and has recently been re-taxed and MOT'd.

Any info on places or people who would buy to export back to the UK or sell on here, whatever... let me know.
