Residents association Newsletter

Postby mickhick » Sun Aug 12, 2007 8:47 am

I hope to become involved with the production of a Newsletter circulated by a local residents association to its members, 99% of whom live in the campo. The circulation is via e-mail, website and, to a lesser extent, hard copy so the size of the Newsletter is not really a problem.
I'm looking for suggestions concerning content (applicants for Page 3 should pm me), so, if you were a member of the association, what sort of subjects would you like to see covered in it?
Thanks
Mick :)

Oscarposcar - of course it's obvious which is why it's being done! But it is equally obvious that other members of this forum are probably recipients of similar newsletters, so why not ask THEIR opinion?

One of the guys in our urbanisation created a website for us all so we could exchange information about the locality, changes of importance - local councils, roadworks, new shops, Spanish holidays, Fiestas etc. but we seem to get quire a few hits and almost no postings. I am thinking of paint spraying one of the walls here with the slogan "Apathy rules OK". I would have spelt it Rools but the grammar police would be on to me.

Community Webs

Postby John M » Mon Aug 13, 2007 6:43 am

Hi MH. Most of the Community Web Sites start off well intentioned, but end up with inane comments like 'The weather here is cold and wet in Manchester, Glasgow etc. etc.' or lists of owners trying to rent their investment. You will have to work very hard to maintain interesting posts and keep the Site 'live'. Another problem is the viagra, p o r n, on-line chemists, gambling etc Webs who will persist in swamping your membership.

If you can work at it, Community Webs are very useful for absent owners abroad to keep in touch, but it is quite an effort for the Webmaster. Good luck if you do give it a go.

Hello John, thanks for that. Luckily I am not webmaster for their site although I am for three other sites, one of which had a lot of problems with spam bots for *beep* sites. It used the same phpBB software as this site and I had to constantly monitor the membership list.
Looking at back issues of their newsletter you can see how the interest started to wane but there have been some younger faces elected to the committee and, hopefully, it will spark some new life into it.

Gardening tips - what will/not grow.
Local history.
Dog walks.
Possibly a translation page for everyday items such as DIY/gardening/shopping items.
Looking after pools.
Articles written by locals/expats.

Tend to agree with ALANINSPAIN and JOHN M. Whilst you may have noble intentions, (and FAIRE D´INCOME´s suggested list of topics should last a few issues) where is it going after that?

We, out of habit, pick up all the free newspapers, work our way through them all and then throw them aside with the comment that it´s the usual rubbish.

Best wishes, but it could easily become a yawn yawn yawn :(

The only free sheet that showed some promise was The Olive Press, but that has descended into an "anti-ayuntamiento/anti-corruption) diatribe.
