insurance for a uk plated vehicle in spain?

Postby princess peach » Tue Jan 15, 2008 1:41 pm

O.k-We are trying to help out a family that have just (sat)moved to Spain. They have brought their UK plated car with them, and the lady has just asked me where can she get her car insurance renewed
So its a UK plated car in Spain...
Is it possible to get it insured here,or will she have to go through a UK branch to insure it?
I havnt a clue,as we have a spanish plated car.
any advice or names of insurance groups(if its possible to insure here)would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

It's not a problem - several Spanish companies will insure UK-reg vehicles, as will Ibex who are based in Gib but have agents along the coast. Try Abbeygate Insurance.

Remember to point out that unless the car has valid MoT and road tax, any insurance claim will be rejected on the grounds that the car is illegal anyway. Insurance companies will always gladly take your money without reminding you of this, of course.

Any UK reg car here can get insurance, even an ITV at some places but they can never have road tax unless they have been back to the UK and got an MOT and insurance first then retaxed in the UK.
Car tax here is payable through the ayuntamiento via Trafico, so paying road tax is impossible surely.

Since when has having no road tax had anything to do with insurance?

Please tell me you are joking?

Of course, if the car is UK registered, it must also have a valid UK MoT and valid UK road tax - regardless of where it is currently located. Insuring it in Spain is not a problem. Getting the insurance company to pay out in the event of a claim, if the car is not legally on the road in the first place, is a whole different question. Simply paying a premium does not necessarily mean you are covered.
