Hello allgram again, is there a cheap way of transfering £s sterling to our soon to be open £ sterling La caixa a/c,we have both been quoted £20 charge each time from Lloydstsb and Barclays, thank you for all your help so far, allgram. :?

It's the Spanish bank charge you need to be wary of. They may charge you a percentage of the sum transferred, just for receiving it. There's also a good chance your money will be sent via an intermediary bank in some far off place, which will take their handling fee too. Be warned.
Some people recommend using money transfer companies instead of the banks. Apparently it can save a lot in fees.

We opened an account with La Caixa and transferred our money by giving the bank manager a TSB cheque sterling. He waived the charges that should have been paid.The cheque took about 3 weeks to clear.

People like Currencies Direct etc. won't touch sterling to sterling, we asked when we needed to move money to a bank in Malta. In the end we just paid by cheque.

Bancaja are operating no charge accounts, other than paying sterling into a euro account but even then you get a better exchange rate than the currency exchange companies give. They will even move money from Spain back to UK commission free.
