Civil War?

Postby Jool » Thu Mar 05, 2009 4:43 pm

I am hearing increasing murmurings about civil war in Spain soon if things don´t change as the crisis is really beginning to bite.......I feel totally naiive but what happens when a country goes to civil war - who will be against who in Spain over this? How does it come about? Would all the airports close? Borders?

From where?

Sounds like a load of nonsense to me, but I'm sure others with more pessimistic outlooks will disagree.

Lavanda, (and anyone else who can) reassurances are in order.
Can we go back to talking about the weather...

Its ok- we are probably (most of us anyway) too old and decrepid for conscription. Where did you ´hear´ about a ´civil war´ Jools?
edit: think of all the EEC money Spain would lose to if a war did happen.

General rumblings in bars and among local spanish who are/were working and even spanish business men............I am not trying to scare monger at all, I, and others, hear it mentioned almost daily, perhaps only over here in Almeria and not the richer Costa del Sol area......

PS - I am not saying it WILL happen as that seems to have taken hold but that everyone is saying it is increasingly likely...........

Maybe the "Socialists under every bed and to blame for everything" brigade against those who just get on with life?

I am going to say no more than the fact that I do not believe Jool's fears to be unfounded.

Some disgruntled people in bars don't usually manage more than being disgruntled. Spain is a HUGE place with lots of factions and vested interests. Some areas of Spain are feeling the pressure of the 'crisis' VERY much; some hardly at all. I can't imagine anyone in Extremadura fighting over problems in any other region. Nor can I imagine the Basques fighting for the restoration of property development in Andalucia. Or Andalucia's estate agents fighting for the jobless in Madrid. I do think we (Spain) are a fractured country but I'm not sure we are at civil war level yet.

Before a civil war would break out I think there would be some sort of attempt at changing the government; the fall of the government; assassinations of government figures; new elections; no overall power for anyone OR an extreme party in power that another extreme party opposes. For a civil war to happen there are usually extreme groups who are frustrated enough to plunge the country into a bloodbath - usually for personal gain or political ideology. I'm not sure anyone else wants to run the country right now as who has any answers to the problems? I'm also not sure that the EU would stand by while a country like Spain has a civil war. This is not the 1930s all over.

Also, Spain has the King. He is a huge and steadying force. He is much loved by Spaniards who still credit him with saving the country from military dictatorship thirty odd years ago during the aborted coup. The Royal Family are seen as a stable influence. The election for M.E.P.s is this year. That's a good time for people to vote for change; vent their spleen; send signals to the government. I'll be watching with interest.

Having written all that, there may be areas of civil unrest where workers fight out-of-workers or natives fight immigrants or have-nots fight haves. That's not necessarily a civil war but civil disturbance nevertheless. These things can escalate.

I hope not. I'm not worried yet. Most sensible people know that we are ALL in for a tight next two or three years. Spain has less toxic debt than many other countries and has secure banks. It will recover. However, there is rising unemployment. Always worrying.

Whilst I realise that anything can happen when one least expects it I can tell you that I have not heard any rumblings whatsoever where I am in Valencia and I just dont see who would be fighting who and surely there would have to be months of civil unrest and disobedience before something like that would happen?

Just cant imagine Armani suited blokes and their mink coat wives fighting hand to hand in the calles here somewhow.

Anyway its Fallas here now till the 20th so we are safe until then as everything stops for fiesta.

I cannot see it happening, agree with Lavanda's post. What may happen is a swing to the right though. There is already an increase in Neo-Natzi type groups and more racially motivated incidents, particularly in the cities.

Well I guess maybe it is different here then, we cannot go to the supermarket without seeing beggars outside, or see disaffected wandering around, my purse was stolen from my handbag, everyone really depressed and dismal, empty bars, empty building sites, empty shops everywhere.......in fact only the food supermarkets have customers.....people looking for houses offer silly prices and thus sellers don´t sell so nothing is moving there, it all feels very much like a strange vacuum with a potentially explosive energy, many were self employed over here due to antiquated business practices and there is an air of gloom and despondency even among those normally known for optimism........

Looking back this reads like a drone and that really is how it feels-....... its horrible.......

Unless it starts very soon, it will have to avoid Benalmadena Pueblo. Some local twerp has decided to dig the main road ( virtually the only one through the village ) up for 3 months. Traffic will be jammed for miles, including armoured cars, tanks, and normal motor vehicles. The only things that will get through are bicycles and motos - maybe the postman can get to us in reasonable time then. :(
