Hi,
On my Jaén Calendarios there is nothing listed for March 2009

Although a "website" does list it as Public Holiday...check in Mercadona (there are other supermarkets 8) ) to see if they are closing.

Think it depends on area. Our schools are shut today (puente) and tomorrow for San Patricio as it is our Patron Saint, but the village 3 kms away is open for business as normal. To my knowledge, schools are open on Thurdays, but who knows, we only usually find out a day before!

Yes, Mercadona is closed on Thursday in this area and the schools are closed on Thursday and Friday (puente) :)

it should be a holiday in most of spain except andalucia, the 19th is definitly not an official holiday in andalucia "según lo aprobado por el Consejo de Gobierno de la Junta de Andalucía, el 15 de julio de 2008" !!
looks like a few civil cervants are cheating !! :)

Not always falling on the same date, this Thursday is known as 'dia de la vieja' mainly in the eastern Almeria region.
It is celebrated each year on the Thursday which coincides with the middle of Lent (This year 19th March) and is always the Thursday before the english 'mother's day'.
Families and friends go to the countryside or beach to have a pic nic lunch....a kind of break from the fasting of Lent.
At sunset a colourful paper doll, La Vieja, (the old one) is broken up to liberate the sweets within.
The destruction of the ‘old lady’ symbolises the end of winter.

It's a holiday in La Herradura in Granada province. It is not a holiday in "most of Spain" - only certain areas.

It doesn't stop people taking the day off and travelling.

it´s holiday in many areas of Spain, not including andalucia
