Gourmet Menu!!

Postby katy » Sun Apr 05, 2009 10:41 am

http://www.theolivepress.es/2009/04/02/ ... -the-menu/

I once posted about my experience of being served a dish of small birds. Didn't realise they served them in Restaurants though  Maybe chips n' egg in a Brit bar isn't so bad after all

Article says people were unaware they were eating them. I find that hard to believe as I have seen how they are eaten....no detail incase you just had a full-English

Yes, the Spanish don't seem to do wildlife very well do they? I was reading just a few days ago about around 40 birds of prey poisoned in Segovia area alone. If you search for "cebos envenenados", (poisoned bait) you'll get thousands of hits.
This guy has an interesting blog, if you are interested in wildlife.

Lowering the moral tone of this a lot, but have you heard the Tom Lehrer song about 'Poisoning Pigeons in the Park'?

I shot this little guy two days ago, but it was with a camera, and I don't think I could consider eating him!

What a lovely photo, hope we don't see it on one of those photo menus one day, with chips
Or they may be ging them as free tapas instead of prawns

We ate at a new Hotel on the road to Monda yesterday. (ECO Hotel) Really wished we hadn't, lots of game on the menu...Deer with Snails etc.. Every table was full of large spanish families. Not cheap at 72 euro for two, maybe the recession hasn't hit around here :?

Katy...
Can't imagine how anyone could even consider eating these tiny birds, must be strange people..

And apart from the ethical issue, there can't be more than a mouthful anyway...what a shame...

Great photo Frank.. :)

Gordon

It's not just the Spanish that eat song birds. Last night on Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson was tucking into a plateful in Vietnam. (Though what that has to do with cars beats me, but what do I know, I'm just a female!!!)

Italy are quite fond of them too. :( Around the campo here you may see them trapped in the nets. They struggle all day until they die from the stress or the heat, some are still alive. I once was there when they collected them and I was distressed. He said, "Because it's you I am going to let this large blackbird free"

The Arabs are very partial to them as well. My OH was offerred a little sad bundle of them from the freezer - to be eaten whole with beak and feet. He politely declined the scrunchy offering.

I used to wonder if the custom here maybe emanated from the days when the Arabs lived in Andalucia, because I also notice other little Spanish customs here that are prevalent in the Middle East.

I don't think my theory is correct though because I know the French are also very fond of their "petit oiseaus ".

They put the whole bird in their mouth, chew and chew, then spit out all the bones...YUK.

Small cute birds or big ugly birds - you are still eating a sentient creature. :(

My Dad used to like brains on toast, but can't say I was tempted by them. (One of the few things I haven't eaten at some time!)

Brains are banned now, even brawn(or is it braun), due to mad cow.

Why would brawn be banned due to mad cow when it's made from pigs head?
