We had our medicals today; €30 each in Cartama Estacion. Blood Pressure, Eyesight, and Grip ( :? ) Questions about Medication, Operations, Diabetes etc. No Problems. We drive on English Licences which have been franked in Madrid with our NIE nos. We can hire cars in the rest of the world at reasonable rates.

Just a bit of extra info, my hubby has a spanish licence and because he drives a lot for work in UK has paper counterpart issued by the DVLC, the only reason I can see for having it is so if he gets caught speeding (or for any other driving offence)in the UK they can give him points :(

Country boy, sounds as if they are tough in Cartama! In Alora they only do an eye test (including one where they use pictures of various shapes instead of alphabetical letters) and a co-ordination test using a very ancient black and white PC. I couldn´t believe they even called it a medical. :o

The medical would be similar but is very basic. About the only thing you can't get away with is bad eyesight.

The UK licence is sent to Madrid by the local office. They somehow "burn" your NIE number into the plastic.

On mine, I was asked if I could read the letters displayed on a wall chart. I said "Yes".
I passed.

We have just renewed our spanish driving licence the medical was a joke, only did a basic eye test, no co-ordination test and just asked general health questions, they then sent to Traffico and the new photo licences arrived 4 weeks later in the post, total charged was 59 euros each. On the new licence mine was for 5 years and my husbands is for 4 years as he will be 70 then. Couldn't understand why the charge was the same! :?

Just looked here http://dgt.es/was6/portal/contenidos/do ... UCCION.pdf on Tráfico website, and it appears the cost is only reduced if the period of validity is reduced for medical reasons. Good news, though, over 70s don't pay for renewals!

is it possible to change my old style , spanish european driving licence to the new creditcard type? now that I no longer can use a residencia card as ID it would be easier to carry the driving licnce card than carry a passport all the time for ID purposes.
my old style driving licence is valid till 2011

In most cases you can use the old style (pink) Spanish driving licence as identification. I have been using mine for the last month whilst waiting for my new driving licence card to come through and I had no problems in any shops

In my experience banks don't accept driving licenses as ID.

Anyone with UK licence who has had medical here - did you just walk in and have the medical? We tried in El Corte Ingles yesterday, but they said they needed something from Trafico, and we would have to go there first.

We just booked an appointment at the closest place (yellow pages). Have UK licences, was just a form to fill in. Take residencia, passport etc.

Hope someone can help this very confused person!
I was under the impression that I didn't need to change
my UK licence to a Spanish one. All I needed to do
was to have a driver's medical in line with Spanish
regulations.
When I went to the Motril drivers medical centre a month
ago I was told I could only have one if I went through the
process of changing my licence to a Spanish one!
For those of you who managed to get a medical without
changing your licence, where did you do this?
Another confusion is that forum members are saying there
is no point renewing the Residency card(mine is due for
renewal)as the new paper one isn't useful for anything.
Yet other members here state that you need
to present your residencia when you have a drivers medical!
Oh dear. I have lived here 5 years and speak pretty good
Spanish yet still these bureaucratic things are a nightmare!

much of the confusion is actually caused by ourselves here on the forum using the incorrect terms...."residencia" ...for example

Hi Julian
When I used the word "Residencia" I was quoting from a posting in this subject
line.
I assumed they meant either the old tarjeta de residencia or the new paper
one.
If it signifies something else maybe you could kindly enlighten me.
Thanks
Jan

I think what Julian means is that the term residencia (residency) refers not to a card or a piece of paper, but a person's status. But I knew what you meant!
My understanding is that if you are officially/legally resident in Spain, (and that's another topic altogether) you should be registered on the Registro Central de Extranjeros, but since residency cards are no longer issued, the only way to prove to whatever authority requests proof that you are registered, is to present the green sheet of paper, which may be useless as ID since it has no photo on it, but clearly does serve some purpose in situations such as this. Therefore, my advice to anyone who's card is due to expire, is to obtain the green certificate of residency. It's relatively painless and costs almost nothing, so why not just get it?
As to the question of whether or not you can have a medical, I'm surprised that the medical centre were concerned about what you required it for, and didn't just accept your money. And as to whether or not you need one at all, the jury is still out examining all the various shades of grey surrounding the issue. My advice, as always - exchange for a Spanish licence.
