That is open to discussion:

The OED is not the be all and end all especially if you see some of the words it is now admitting as standard English. For me the plural of forum is, and will always be, fora so thank you, Jim Allen. Now back to the plot.

AndyT,

I was a bit concerned by your negative reference to posts being made on this Forum by people who neither live in Spain nor work there.
I don't recall ever seeing anything restricting the forum to residents in Spain, whether they work here or not. My understanding was that this forum was for people who "had an interest" in Spain or, more particularly Andalucia.

I neither live nor work in Spain but it doesn't, IMHO, preclude me from posting on the site if I have any thoughts, comments or advice which I feel "may" be of interest to any other users.

As far as the "English" English language it is just that - the definitive dictionary for the language.

English is a living language and is constantly changing. I am sure if you had access to the OED then you would find that Fora has an entry but now Forums is the accepted usage of the word.

I note that the OED is no longer going to be published in a paper form - just on the Internet and constantly updated.

Not many people could afford the paper version - 20 volumes for £750 - a snip!!

I went through the standard Latin education (and the regular beatings) and am conversant with the plural form of 'forum', 'fora' (fora, fora, fora, forarum, foris, foris), but it's also 'forums' which is more generally used by the forum-goers. After all, we are inventing our own language here as we preside over the...
death of the Spanish forums.
(Or, to be more precise, the British forums in Spain)
And no, the EWN news is reheated from the wires, the OP makes theirs up :)

Sorry I don't agree. This is a far superior dictionary:

I "swear" by Roger Mellies profanisaurus to be honest. A dictionary I refer to often
Property owner in Andalucia since 2002. How time flies.

I have deleted this post and made it the subject of separate thread because Jim Allen is concerned that this one is going off topic with the added bonus that I won't have to look at the title:

There seems to be some weird compulsion on forums, to discuss the admin and general running of other forums.
I refuse to get involved in this, I simply enjoy the forums that I take part in, and if I don't? - I stop posting. It is no good trying to change them, as they are something of a group entity, according to their members, rather than how it is administered.

Rather than these places dying, it may simply be that people don't have the time for contributing to endless forums that they used to have? I only use this Spanish forum for general things on Andalucia (and Spain) but I also read and contribute to the Nature Iberica and Wildside forums plus writing for a walking forum. That's it for me as I'm busy with my life.

If you think that an 'average' person might log on, read and contribute to this forum, possibly another one or two, FaceBook, Twitter, Friend's Reunited, Guido Fawlkes, read the press on-line, read and reply to e-mails and look other things up PLUS catching up on last night's YouTube Factor X stuff Dancing in a Strict Way or whatever, it becomes impossible to 'get a life' and do anything else.

This forum does not appear to be dying. I don't look at it as much as I used to, nor contribute as much, because I'm very happy. I have fewer questions or problems or things I need to know - because I have been a member for about six years and learned stuff. That must be the same for many other happy, contented ex-pats. Themes and topics on here are beginning to 'come around' faster these days. It's a bit boring for me BUT not always. Depends.

Are Spanish forums dying? Some will. Some won't. Some need to. Others don't. :D

Same for me too Lavanda, I have much less time to be on here due to work and family commitments plus I have hardly any questions to ask these days, thank goodness!! I am settled, happy and contented with my life and don't often feel the need for others opinions on things like i used to, I also know many more people in person who I can ask advice.

It is much quieter on here generally, obviously because there are much fewer people moving to Spain and a lot that were here a few years ago have gone back to the UK. I'm going nowhere unless I have to!! :D
