And what kind of an exchange rate do the stores in UK give when you want to pay in Euros (I understand the the acceptance of Euros is becoming more common in UK). It is always going to be less than the bank rate.

as far as sterling being the currency of Gib, friends of ours just came back from Turkey, where the Lire IS the currency and they had a better deal by paying for everything in Euros, which is NOT their currency

how does that work????

I think I read this wrong. You were not getting 2 Euros for a pound, you had to pay 2 Euros for every pound of the cheque. Probably more than what you would pay in Gib. I never found the exchange rate in the pub that we normally ate in in Gib to be outrageous. Cost more Euros but not bad.

Gib is a toilet? Does that mean you've got to be flush to go there?

Sterling is not the currency of Gibraltar.
The official currency is Gibraltar pounds which are designed to rip tourists off, Gibraltar pounds are useless anywhere else and I doubt you could exchange them anywhere other that a british bank though I may stand corrected !!

Well it's a pity that Gib. gets so much bad press, I think that it is still a worth-while place to visit...so much history..but perhaps that doesn't appeal to so many people...shame...they don't know what they are missing... :(

My experience is that banks wont exchange it unless you have an account with them, you can actually exchange at the FX place but can you believe they will offer 1 to 1 BUT charge commission. (im not joking).

I am just back from a weekend in Gibraltar. I normally go for a day only every three months for cigarettes and Morrison's.

However this time I was a tourist.

I went up the rock, visited loads of bars, ate good food and visited Ocean Village which I was most impressed with. I travelled by bus everywhere for next to no money.

Apart from the weather, it was the perfect weekend. Changed all the Gibraltar pounds I had left in La Linea and got a decent rate.
