Passport Renewal

Postby Design Guru » Mon Sep 20, 2010 9:37 pm

Anyone any ideas on this?

I need to renew my passport, which means I have to fill out forms and send my old passport to Madrid.
However I work in Gibraltar and need my passport on a daily basis for ID so can't send it.

What should I do?

If you work in Gib you can renew it in Gib.

Take your work contract to secretary lane, (in the morning) fill out a form give them £42 and you will get one in 4 days or less. I believe for around £10 more you'll have it in 24hours.

Forget Madrid, they will charge €175 and take ages.

So, why is it cheaper to renew a British Passport in Gib than it is in Britain itself????

many years ago I renewed my passport in Gib, I didn´t work, nor live there, but if I remember rightly there was a difference to th normal passport, I think it was as a british subject, not citizen, or something like that, that was a long time ago though, maybe it´s all changed since.

Id imagine that if you renew in spain you would not be a british citizen either as you reside in spain.

Im not sure it matters too much.

Where you live has nothing to do with it.

Almost all holders of British passports are UK Citizens.

No, Gibraltarians are British Overseas Territory Citizens and have the right to register as British Citizens. Their passport would normally show them as British Citizens.

The term "British Subject" is an archaic term and hardly anyone now has that classification.

The front of the Gib passport says European Union United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland Gibraltar

It looks exactly the same but with the Word Gibraltar on it!

It's 42 quid for adults, 25 for kids, and it takes FOURTEEN days not 4...You can pay more and have it within 24 hours. You get to keep your passport and then when you go and collect the new one, they cancel the old one, chop off the corners and then give you it back.

To answer Gus' question, it's cheaper because it's not Gib issuing a UK passport, it's Gib issuing a Gib passport...You can pay more (about 160 i think) to have a UK issued one.....

The place shuts at 12.45.
