If this is true it should put the cat amongst the pigeons:

Re: UK Winter Fuel Payment
And so they should.
When it went to court last time it was a fudge hence the rule that said you could only export it.
It's a benefit which all pensioners should be entitled to - just like the state pension.
I get it anyway but I would like to see everyone else get it. My winter fuel bills are huge - far higher than the UK.

Mrs L is currently jumping up and down and shouting "how do I claim","how do I claim"? If I recall mother just got it when it started I wonder if that will happen with ExPats.

For information see here:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Pensionsand ... /DG_198331
although the ruling is not yet reflected in the information.
It says that you do not need to claim if you are receiving a state pension but it may be as well to do so anyway. It states that a claim form will be available on that page from August onwards.

Why would ex-pats need it...wasn't some of you claiming that prices hadn't gone up for 7 years
I do agree if some gets it then they should all get it and it does cost a lot to heat spanish houses...unless you want to sit around in woolies and sox

Re: UK Winter Fuel Payment
Oh goody, if this comes about the OH will be able to get it in 2.5 years. £200 per year is quite a bit more than we spend on gas for both cooking and heating in a full year - the place is going to be like a greenhouse!
I wasn't someone supporting the campaign to have it paid to expat pensioners, though, we made the decision to move knowing that as we left before reaching pensionable age we wouldn't be eligible. I wouldn't be aggrieved if it was means tested either, it does seem a bit ridiculous that it's paid to some people who really don't need it, along with child benefit (although probably not at the same time of course!). I'd rather the amount paid to people to whom it really does make a difference was increased, although then I suppose it would benefit the element of society that has never worked in their lives. It's very difficult to work out how to help people who might have worked hard but earned low wages and not been able to save without also giving more to those who have preferred to be idle at the taxpayers' expense.

It was -4 on my terrace this year, lost lots of plants in the garden. Gas bottles have more than doubled since I came to live here, still cheaper than the UK but living off just the state pension this is a good news for me.

Hurrah! The wife gets it as she's a few months older than me!Mowser wrote:I miss the date for 2012 - 2013 by two days.

That's your lot then as the web page above says one payment per household.
Re: UK Winter Fuel Payment
I think the allowances should be means tested. I saw in the news that people who earn up to £72,000pa could still be entitled to benefits

Re: UK Winter Fuel Payment
Unlikely as it's effectively part of the State Pension and to means test that would be unacceptable to most of the electorate.katy wrote:I think the allowances should be means tested. I saw in the news that people who earn up to £72,000pa could still be entitled to benefits

Re: UK Winter Fuel Payment
I wonder if it will start at 60 or will we have to wait until 65? Hubby is 60 in January.....
Re: UK Winter Fuel Payment
Just seems a little unfair to me. Some friends went on a world cruise for 3 months this winter and they actually made a joke about the fuel allowance. Ok it was a one off and they don't do it every year, but...
OH doesn't agree with me, he thinks that although they may not need the fuel allowance they have propbably paid loads more in tax...two sides to every story I suppose!

Re: UK Winter Fuel Payment
Bringing this topic back to the attention of all, was mooching around the pensions site looking for the claim form (not yet tiger) when I discovered the form for back dated payment for those previously eligable but not receiving as abroad. This does not affect us but there may be some that have been here a while, receiving pension, that it does.
Here is a link to the relevant bit.

That link doesn't work and anyway it's the same one Beachcomber posted earlier in the thread.
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Pensionsand ... /DG_198331
It isn't really relevant as it only covers the situation to back claim for '97 to 2000
Claim for past winters
If you are eligible, you can claim Winter Fuel Payments for the years 1997/98 to 1999/2000.
From 2000/01 time limits for claims were introduced. This means that payments can't be made for late claims for any winters from 2000/01 onwards.
This could of course change due to the new ruling but this page is old info and doesn't cover it.
