general strike

Postby morlandg » Mon Nov 12, 2012 5:01 pm

I understand there will be a general strike this wednesday. Does anyone know if the schoolkids will have a day off school that day?

Can I rightly assume restaurants will also be closed?
You can spend, minutes, hours, days, weeks or even months over-analyzing a situation; trying to put the pieces together, justifying what could've, would've happened - or you can just leave the pieces on the floor and move the f**k on.

I think it depends on where you are - when the last General Strike happened all the smaller local shops and pretty much all the bars and restaurants locally stayed open, it was just places like the supermarkets and Correos plus the schools and public offices which closed. In the cities, however, many more places are likely to be closed.

Thanks for that - my friend arrives today for a week so will plan round that just in case.

It's very odd. Nothing in El Pais in English at all about a strike; last time there were posters all over the village about it but nothing this time. The MRW courier lad says there is a strike but they will be working so it will be interesting to see what happens.

mercadona is open tomorrow
My spelling is Wobbly. It's good spelling but it Wobbles, and the letters get in the wrong places.

That's the theory but watch out for pickets.

The last time we had a strike they managed to close the shop.

My friends work in a big supermarket and that is also open tomorrow, they reckon this general strike won,t get the same support as the last one, we will have to wait and see !

I had a phone call this afternoon from Movistar to say they will be installing my new router tomorrow.

Yes the spanish equivalent of flying pickets. Happens all the time on the coast and in Málaga city. They close down and reopen when they have moved on. Small places won't close, they are too scared of losing their jobs, will be like the UK strikes, public sector dominated.

Many of the smaller, Spanish - owned establishments may be closed if they are threatened with "repercussions"!!

The small venta close to us is normally shut on Tuesdays, it was open today, so I guess they will be shutting for their rest day tomorrow instead.
It will depend on who you are as to how many people you say will strike- the government will say x amount and the unions will give a far greater amount.

Some people up here are on strike but I went to work and every student was there. The ones who came by underground said there were some slight delays.
The BBC were reporting it as a pan southern European strike.

There are some aircraft wandering over, perhaps not as many as normal, so seems AGP is operating with a reduced flow rate.

El Ingenio, Velez Malaga, is open.
Not very busy and a few extra security guards wandering about.
Cheers

No surprises that Movistar didn't turn up - whether that was strike or their incompetence who knows.

Haven't heard any trains today.
