Sorry it wasn't you, Irene! It's so nice to hear of someone who has obviously had a very hard life finally striking it lucky, though. His family will have financial security now.

Yes, that's brilliant - it's good that someone who really needs money has won, I'm very happy for him and his family. (Said through ever so slightly gritted teeth )

Pity he won't get the 9 million but only 7.2 after the 20% gambling tax ! Then he'll want to give some to the kids & there goes another 35% 'gift tax ' on each amount dished out !! ( Same as inheritance tax & included in same law ) .

I think the tax on gambling winnings is a good way to raise substantial amounts of tax without really hurting anybody. The winner still has €7.2M he didn't have the day before, just for the price of buying a ticket, and he would know when he bought it that the tax would be payable, so it's his choice whether to play and pay the tax or sit it out and forego the chance of winning if he didn't like the tax. People can hardly argue that they've had to work hard to earn it.
The gift tax does seem rather harsh, though, as he'll have had the 20% tax witheld from the winnings.
