National Health Scheme
National Health Scheme
We are considering taking residency in spain. We currently have private health insurance with Sanitas. If we take residency, would we qualify for Spanish national health coverage even though we have never worked in Spain? If not, is there a way to buy it with a monthly payment?
Thanks in advance for any advice on this.

Re: National Health Scheme
It may be possible to buy into the Spanish health service after you have been resident for 12 months. Prior to that you will have to pay for private cover.

By law if you have residencia you are supposed to get free healthcare but good luck trying to get it unless you fancy a drawn out court case! Presume you arent of state pension age.

Articulo 3....according to C.A.B spain. Been several court cases that have been won based off it. But the inss offices just make up their own rules (pre april 2012) so its inpossible to get unless you fancy a drawn out court case

OK, read all that. It may be the law but I think most people will be dead from head banging before they get through that minefield. As for being entitled to a doctor who speaks English - try that in Granada province.

Yeah totally agree.read loads of stories of ppl basically saying sod it and not bothering.
Re: National Health Scheme
Yeah good luck with that.El Cid wrote: As for being entitled to a doctor who speaks English - try that in Granada province.
We have had to rely on the telephone translation service a few times but have been mostly fortunate at the hospitals that the doctors we have seen speak English (it normally starts with them apologising for their bad English and then they speak it perfectly!)
Re: National Health Scheme
What is the telephone number for the translation service?
Who would normally phone them, the doctor or you?

I have not used the service, but when I looked at it some time ago when it was announced, it seems that it is an internal system. The doctor and the patient each have a cordless handset, both of which are connected to an interpreter at a central location. You speak English into your handset and it is translated to Spanish for the doctor and vice versa.
Incidentally, the Google translate app can be used like that with two way translation.

Thanks for the information.
I think I'd rather trust a real person than Google translate for medical matters.

Is it different rules for people who are on pension from home country?
I have friend considering making permanent move likely next year... unlikely I will but never say never...
thanks
Re: National Health Scheme
If you are a pensioner, or regarded as a pensioner because of, say, incapacity benefit in the UK then you and your spouse, irrespective of their age, will be regarded as pensioners here in Spain and will get health cover when you become permanent residents.

Re: National Health Scheme
That's not the way we have used it Sid. We simply have the telephone number in our mobile (953011080) and phone it if/when we need it when sat in front of the doctor. When you phone they ask what language you want (they offer 46) and then connect you to an English speaking translator - just a matter then of handing the telephone back and for between you and the doctor - not ideal but sometimes better than nothing elseEl Cid wrote:I have not used the service, but when I looked at it some time ago when it was announced, it seems that it is an internal system.
