Disposal of old engine oil

Postby TorreDelAguila » Fri Oct 20, 2017 1:15 pm

Just a reminder to anyone who does their own oil changes on a car...
Policy in Andalucia is for Punto Limpia only to accept used oil in 5-litre (max) containers, and no more than five of these at any one time.
Just tripped up over this by arriving at the Velez-Malaga PL with several 20-litre containers of it (which they did accept as a one-off).
This has been policy for some time; I just forgot it.

Thats why people fly tip. Cant believe tips turn people away when they are trying to do the right thing.

If you have that much old oil they are probably right to assume it is commercial waste.

Hola

Can't old oil be burnt to heat the workshop?

Or wrong, in my case.
I made use of the plethora of abandoned 20-litre (agrochemical) containers which litter the campo, and avoided some trips to the PL by using larger containers.
Can't win 'em all.
Never mind, not the end of the world.

I used to mix my old engine oil with the new type of creosote. It makes a great preservative for wooden pots and fence panels

Now simply using surplus 5-litre containers instead.

In the UK, where fly-tipping is now costing local authorities and others a fortune, an answer must be to return to the system where local authority disposal points/depots accepted all waste (domestic and trade) free-of-charge, which was common in the '60s. The fly-tipped waste will need to end up there anyway, or being processed by the local authority, so they may as well accept it at the depots, free, in the first place. It could then be decently recycled.

Good point chris

I don't understand the mentality of people.

We have a council tip a couple of miles from us which accepts more or less every thing foc.

Yet we still get normal household stuff dumped regularly.

Is there an easy place to find old/empty oil containers, for storing the old oil before taking it to the "Punto Limpia"?

Buy your olive oil and/or vegetable oil in 5litre bottles, then don't throw them away? We buy our Solan de Cabra drinking water in 5 litre size and refill bottles to go in the fridge - ideal for aircon drainage collectors or old engine oil.

You use a lot of oil, eh? A 5l bottle would last me several years.

But thanks, if they are not strict about what containers the oil has to be in, I can hopefully find some of the big 5/6l water bottles, or buy as a last resort.

I change the oil in both our cars every 6 months or so, wether they need it or not. I used to use a 20L oil drum, but now I use water bottles etc and drop it off when I´m passing.

i normally stick them in a "freezer bag" tie it up, and put it in the pile of them at the punto limpio next to the oil container?

Thanks for that info, up until now I've used a local garage for oil and filter disposal but they have closed down.
