Gas heating

Postby Gagafarah » Mon Nov 19, 2018 12:15 pm

Hi all, can anybody advise on the different kinds of portable gas heaters: catalytic, infrared radiant, ceramic and blue flame ones ?.. which is better, thanks.

Gagafarah must be quite disappointed in the replies to his very first post here.
His/her question was about gas heaters! :shh:

Surely you don’t expect people to read the post properly before they reply? :lolno:

I've had the catalytic ones and also one with coal effect and flame, but I don't like them as I find them fumey and they give me a headache. They are very effective and cheap to run but I only use electric heaters now. They can cause a lot of condensation, especially if you have an old property with stone walls. Without any flue I'm not sure how you can use them safely, but I have given up with them now.

I agree with Wicksey. They are very effective, but produce huge amounts of water vapor which could be a problem. Also, if they have a fault they could produce carbon monoxide which is a killer. Used occasionally with decent ventilation they are good.

Any form of electric heater is very expensive and there is no such thing as an extra efficient electric heater apart from aircon units which use up to a third less energy that a conventional electric heater.

It's a difficult choice, but if I had to choose a portable heater for heavy usage I would probably go for a thermostatically controlled fan heater over a gas heater. If I was buying a gas heater I would favour the catalytic versions.

Gas is cheaper as the cost of the bottles is heavily subsidised by the government.

We got them for the (too frequent) times when the power went off. As this became a rare occurrence we got rid asap. On balance the warmth overrode the smell and the damp.
