How is everybody getting on, what with Brexit and Covid ?
Re: How is everybody getting on, what with Brexit and Covid ?
Perhaps it will show up in official stats soon instead of just anecdotal. Always been a significant Swedish and Norwegian community in Fuengirola, schools, Churches etc. A lot are second homes though.

i think once things settle down in another 12 months with C19 and all the mud slinging about brexit the Brits will return. The CDS has always attracted lots of Scandinavians.
Re: How is everybody getting on, what with Brexit and Covid ?
Only the brits who can afford to. Or have an ex council house in the south east to sell.

Is that what you did
Re: How is everybody getting on, what with Brexit and Covid ?
The trickiest thing now for the Brits is if they want to move here permanently, or had wanted to spend 6 months of the winter here. If they want a property for shorter holidays throughout the year then there won't be so much of a problem caused by being a 'third country'. However, when people will actually be able to easily and freely travel between here and Britain is another thing!
Re: How is everybody getting on, what with Brexit and Covid ?
Yeah covid and brexit together, a perfect storm has pushed alot of people to make decisions one way or the other. One retired neighbour who used to travel down with several dogs was thinking of selling up because of brexit and the hassle of pet passports and being dictated to interms the time they could spend here. Then covid hit and they havnt been back for almost three years. Heck knows when they will reappear. Another set have just gone after a quick 2 week visit after not been here for 16 months. But not staying for alot longer because it eats into the 90/180.the house was blight for long winter stays (bexit bleeped that up!). Then again peole should be thankful they can afford a second home I certainly wont feel sorry for them. You cant have it all unless you can afford a golden visa!

Some people cannot afford to buy anything but that doesn't stop them.

Im talking more about the requirements to move to spain not just buy a holiday home as a non resident. They were very small compared to now. 5 grand in the bank and private healthcare if not a pensioner. Or a job with a contract stating minimum hours inorder to cover health and SS payments.or set up as self employed. You didnt need to own a second home. Non of that is possible now after brexit. Only those with large lump sums can do it.

The biggest problem we relation to both Brexit and Covid is that I'm unable to get back to the UK for my normal weekend breaks.
As far as buying a second house is concerned, there must be a fair percentage the 90 days in 180 doesn't affect. Not every one wants to spend that amount of time here. There are others who share time with families. As a result, the market will continue to sell to British buyers. Albeit, not at the same rate

Yeah non retires who have a place bought and shared amongst family and friends for two weeks here and there. Younger people with an inheritance who buy something for 50k up in torrevieja for eg.. But its pretty expensive where iam compaired to other parts so i see alot more retired or almost retired who bought with the sole purpose of escaping the winter months while the places are empty through the heat of summer.
Re: How is everybody getting on, what with Brexit and Covid ?
Before Brexit there were rules on long stays. A few who we knew used to spend around 6 months but fell foul of tax and registration rules.

A place in the Sun is still going strong.
Inland Malaga has just been on with John relocating to Spain in 2020. They never ask what are you going to do about healthcare or visas or learning the language.

It makes you go when they have people on saying we want to buy somewhere so we can spend 6 months of the winter in spain etc etc. They really should educate the people and viewers but then they wouldnt have much of a programe.
Or in the soaps when some character is leaving because he got a job as a dj or chef in a euro country. not likely.

Re: How is everybody getting on, what with Brexit and Covid ?
I was watching the series recorded last year with some of the programmes being recorded in Oct/Nov time, so little time to move here and start the process. Others say vaguely they plan to move here 'when they retire', but of course, as discussed elsewhere today, obtaining a non lucrative visa looks quite complicated and hard work. Not like the pre-Brexit days.

They also tell them the local Mayor will allow them to make alterations. Of course “Place in the Sun” sells properties. They never show them if there is a pig sty round the corner.
Re: How is everybody getting on, what with Brexit and Covid ?
I believe most, if not all, of the Place in the Sun programmes were recorded before the end of 2019.
I believe the full implications of Brexit, regarding moving/ holidaying/ buying in Spain, weren't realised until towards the end of 2020.

Most of the latest series was recorded in 2020 and the presenter is clearly social distancing from the couples viewing properties. It says at the end of each episode the date of recording, for example the Viñuela one was recorded December 2020. They were shown May/June time this year and are all available on CH4 catchup.
Re: How is everybody getting on, what with Brexit and Covid ?
Yeah the most recent series is very upto date. And they have known the F.O.M consequences since the vote. Thats always been the same
