Air-Con
Hi All, Its a bit warm at night and i'm thinking of having an air conditioner installed.
There seem to be a lot of portable "evaporative coolers" and other things that look like "pretendy" air contitioners about.
Does anyone know if these are any good ? Or is it better to spend the money on a "proper" unit.
All advice most welcome thanks.

Re: Air-Con
I spent over €400 on a portable air-conditioning unit. It was big and clumsy with a pipe which had to be dangled out of a window and, although it used a lot of electricity, it wasn't very effective and I gave it away.
I spent around €1.000 on a proper installation by a reputable installer which was carried out cleanly and efficiently. It works perfectly.
But it's your choice.

Re: Air-Con
You have to be 'fan compatible' to do this - unfortunately, I liked it cool, but hubby didn't...

Re: Air-Con
I wouldn't go down the portable aircon route as I also hear they're very noisy, plus you need to put the outlet pipe somewhere.
We use the aircon in the living room quite a lot (now for instance, mid-late afternoon onwards). It's our cool place to retreat to when it gets to 29 or above in the house and we don't like being outside much in the summer heat. We had a unit put in the bedroom too but rarely use it, preferring fans. The ceiling fan particularly is good and we also put one on the windowledge to pull in the cooler air. We have those on all night long. Our units are small ones for our small rooms and cost about 850€ each 3 years back (installed by a proper company) Fujitsu, with a 'quiet' mode.

We had a simar unit to beach. Its ok if you want to use it drawing the day, certainly cools the room but it is noisy so imo no good for sleeping. Cost around 400 (hisense) and we sold it when moving. Also had one of the ice cooler ones that we were given but it wasnt much use. I wouldn't recommend those types.
If its for sleeping then definitely get a proper air-conditioning unit. Pay as much as you can as ifs fasle ecomony getting a cheap one.
In the meantime a frozen hot water bottle wrapped in a tea towel works a treat in bed

Re: Air-Con
Agree with all the above comments on portable aircon units, noisy, clumsy pipe to get rid of water and expensive to run. The modern aircon units are quiet, cheap to run and also provide heat in the winter. its a no brainer.

Re: Air-Con
I'd forgotten about the heating. We use that all the time in the winter and well worth having just for that!

For some reason, I assumed everyone in Andalucia had proper aircon / heating installed !

Re: Air-Con
We only got ours after 18 years and I know of people who don't have it. We used to use the log fire more in the winter but last winter only bought 3 barrowloads of wood, so about 36€, rather than between 150€ and 200€ in some of the previous years. I do find the aircon fan a bit annoying though, even though it's very quiet. My poor eyes have never been the same since we have it and I have problems with them constantly watering. We've only got a small living room and I cannot get away from the draught.

Wicksey - To help avoid any draught, you can alter the position of the flaps with your remote, and also the direction of the air by altering the vertical flaps by hand.Wicksey wrote: ↑Tue Jul 27, 2021 1:41 pm We only got ours after 18 years and I know of people who don't have it. Re: Air-Con
We have it but its as old as the house. Knocking on 20 years. Impossible to sleep with it on in the main bedroom as its so noisy and doesnt work properly in the second bedroom (the joys of renting).luckily we have a new unit in the living room. Its handy for when you are having dinner but its a case of have it on for hrs and hrs or short spurts which are wasted once you open up. We are high up though so get a breeze most of the time.
Several spanish neighbours dont have it even though they have just gutted their houses and they get very hot inside. I guess its a love hate relationship with some. British neighbours hide away in the summer.Shutters down and aircon on all day. We cant tell if they are in or out!

Re: Air-Con
The fins are already pointing as far away from me as possible and the flap is only half open but I am still in the draught. I shall have to move the furniture or pinch my OH's chair I thinkfincalospinos wrote: ↑Tue Aug 03, 2021 2:51 pm Wicksey - To help avoid any draught, you can alter the position of the flaps with your remote, and also the direction of the air by altering the vertical flaps by hand.

Not related to aircon but your eyes - mine water a lot and oddly, its because they are dry so a really good eye drops product helps a lot. I'm using Belcils just a drop in each eye morning and night and mine are so much better.
Re: Air-Con
Thank you, I have actually got dry eyes too. I've been told to use similar drops 5 times a day by the eye specialist at the hospital! It all seemed to start when we got the aircon though, but that could have just been a coincidence. When we're not using the aircon we have fans on so I guess it's just the general draught that makes them worse.

We have an 'on the wall / proper' one in the lounge, and it's fantastic, almost silent, makes the room too cold sometimes.
We also have a portable one in the bedroom. It works fantastic, but it's noisy. The missus can't sleep with it on.
