Re: 'Brit Expats leaving Spain...'
Looks like from next summer passport control won’t have to use calculators to identify overstayers...

The auto scanners are already in place at Malaga Airport but not being currently used because of Covid...
Re: 'Brit Expats leaving Spain...'
But they are for EU citizens not UK.

Re: 'Brit Expats leaving Spain...'
Most EU citizens do not need a passport to enter Spain from outside Schengen. Only those whose country doesn't have ID cards. Does the ID card have the same information as the passport?
Re: 'Brit Expats leaving Spain...'
My TIE has DoB and place of birth so same as passport, but also has address and NIE so is better than just a passport. I wonder if we will get through the EU passport control rather than the non-EU one with the TIE when entering from a third country? We've used the TIE for flying internally successfully.

At some point though we would need to show that we are resident here otherwise the new passport scanners would keep thinking we'd overstayed the 90 days.elusive wrote: ↑Sat Oct 09, 2021 3:28 pmI cant imagine so as you are a non E.U nationalWicksey wrote: ↑Sat Oct 09, 2021 12:25 pm My TIE has DoB and place of birth so same as passport, but also has address and NIE so is better than just a passport. Re: 'Brit Expats leaving Spain...'
Sorry wicksey. Yes i see your point. Ive read the cab post but not to sure how they will work. I presume they are just automatic scanners like airports have now. So maybe residents will have to go through the manned booths. Even more difficult when uk passport numbers change so unless they are updated with the national police then your passport number might not match your TIE (presuming its documented when you apply)

Re: 'Brit Expats leaving Spain...'
Going back to the subject of this thread....It woudn't surprise me if brit expats have left Spain or are trying to leave....Many Europeans have left the Uk, We are in a pandemic and that will have unsettled many people, the feeling of being locked in and can't get back to your home country as or when you want will have had a huge effect on people, being absent from families and the not knowing what the future has in store will have made the dream life in Spain for some Brits feel not so dreamy. I guess many of the conversations during those long days of lock will have included looking at their lives and coming to new conclusions about their futures.
Re: 'Brit Expats leaving Spain...'
I think for anyone who was never fully settled into life here then the pandemic was the final straw for them. I know of people (all women) who are desperate to get back to the UK to see family, particularly grandchildren. Perhaps they were regular visitors to the UK anyway and Covid had stopped that, and they now want to be back permanently. I only went once a year, twice at most, for a week and have no family apart from my FiL, so I don't feel a big need to go there. For most people I know returning, the family tends to have been the main reason and/or never feeling fully 'at home' here.

Definitely, among women, the grandchildren factor looms large
Re: 'Brit Expats leaving Spain...'
Surely an issue for some leaving is the need and cost for medical insurance to become resident. Flying under the radar must be much harder now.
We are finding that travel insurance is getting expensive and trips for older people restricted to 31 days. I consider it an essential knowing a few people who have fallen ill on a trip.

Travel insurance is a problem, yes. Look at Saga and other companies that specialise in the older traveller.
Re: 'Brit Expats leaving Spain...'
Medical insurance for those under state pension age yes that could be an issue. I know a few people living here under state pension age on very small private pensions with no health care. One couple went back in the last few months, although they had been unsettled for a few years i think covid and brexit probably was the final straw. I dont believe they had any cover/residents so it would have been hard for them to get covered under the W.A even though they had been here 7 yearsphototext wrote: ↑Fri Oct 29, 2021 8:50 pm Surely an issue for some leaving is the need and cost for medical insurance to become resident. Re: 'Brit Expats leaving Spain...'
I have read the above with interest - however, I have lived in Tenerife for the last 23 years or so. Having recently just had to return to Ireland to sell my house there and returned straight back to Tenerife - why has my passport been stamped ? I have only travelled within Europe and did not foresee this. I am British by the way but obviously have not been there for many years. Does anyone know why this is?
Re: 'Brit Expats leaving Spain...'
Hola
If you presented your TIE card / residencia certificate then your passport shouldn't be stamped otherwise, you are not resident and need to have your passport stamped.

Re: 'Brit Expats leaving Spain...'
You could have done all of the above and found your passport was still stamped..I have come to learn that when it comes to anything Spanish and official they are not all trained on the same page.dxf wrote: ↑Thu Nov 25, 2021 6:26 pmHolaGenie wrote: ↑Thu Nov 25, 2021 5:17 pm I have read the above with interest - however, I have lived in Tenerife for the last 23 years or so. Re: 'Brit Expats leaving Spain...'
Some reasons given for stamping include not been a permanent resident so they can tell how long you have been out of the country. Obviously not a reason for genie presuming you showed your residents payments.
