Strat type guitar wanted

Postby LifeofBrian » Fri Oct 22, 2021 11:23 pm

Hi All,
Yes, I am looking for a start type electric guitar. Trouble is I need it to be wider than the standard at the neck. Alternatively a 335 type but do keep in mind I cannot afford custom prices as I have retired to Spain on a UK pension!! Thinking about it, would anyone know of a blues guitar teacher in the Vinuela or Velez area? Proper player if you know what I mean! Many thanks forum buddies.

Hi! fellow guitarist.
I have a Fender Strat (genuine)....and a Telecaster (also genuine)....and a few other guitars as well. The standard nut width on a Fender type guitar (neck width) varies between 42mm and 43mm and I don't suppose a 1mm difference meets your requirement of "wider".
I don't know about a 335 (Gibson), but in both cases, Fender and Gibson and their look-alikes, the nut width will be listed as part of the specification if you browse web sites such as Thomann.de or Gear4music.es.
My only guitar with a wider neck is my Spanish one.....flat fingerboard and nylon strings....about as far removed from a strat style as you can get!
As you infer, a custom made neck will set you back a small fortune!
Why do you want a wider neck, may I ask?

I have a number of guitars, In my opinion a good choice for you would be a TOKAI T Burst duncan, it has a slightly wider neck than most electric guitars, a strato copy (Ibanez for example might be a bit heavy if you're a novice.

I actually started playing with a (Chinese copy) of a fender electro accoustic which has a decent neck width and the added benefit of being able to play either accoustic or through an amp, I still play that a lot because I now have some arthrosis in my hands and it's easy to play having a wider neck.

Being on a pension remember that if you go electric then you will also need an amp, connecting cables and other stuff, anyway, that's my view and good luck, as a starter if you want results on your first session I\d recommend you tackle 'Horse with no name" by America, it's only 2 easy chords and you'll have it within a couple of hours !!

Just checked my collection and they all have 42-43mm nut width. What sort of price are you looking to pay as i have been contemplating thinning out my collection. Stratalikes I have a couple of Peavey Raptors, Yamaha Pacifica at the low end pricewise. Don't have a 335, but i do have an Epiphone Wildcat with Bigsby in natural. Virtually unused.

Have a few other various, Ibanez, Epiphone les paul black beauty which i would also let go.

Sadly my ability to buy guitars far outweighs my ability to play.
Regards

Bob

That's a good'un.....but it's got a 42mm nut so it ain't wide....... in fact it's the narrowest of nuts. At €500 it's something like €200 - €300 off the new price.
Don't know anything about them...looks a bit like a Gibson SG but with a longer scale length....longer than a strat!
Happy hunting!

Hi All,
So pleased to have these replies. I will look them over more carefully over the next couple of days and respond accordingly. Very big thank you. Trooperman...it's just because I have big hands. Hard work in my younger days and over many years. I have a DANELCTRO 64 copy (long story) which has a 42mm neck width. I got hold of it shortly before retiring. If I cut my nails really short and place my fingers very carefully I can only just play a B7 chord. Trust me, it is not a happening thing. As I say, there are some interesting replies and I promise to do them justice over the next few days. Please take good care of yourselves and thanks again.

Don't get too worried...too soon! We all have differing sizes and thus problems (for guitarists) with our hands: my left index finger is rather too short to play a bar chord....but I've learned to adapt. If you struggle with a B7, down at the neck end (and it is a complex shape to fit your fingers around) try playing an A7 shape (bar the top 5 strings at the second fret and stop the first string on the third fret) but move it up two frets.

.......and, how do you "shape" your B7? Most chord books show a 4 finger placement, strumming across all six strings, but, as I say, that is tortuous.....you can get away with three fingers but don't play the two bottom E and A (sixth and fifth) strings! So there are two alternatives for you already!

I've a feeling that any non-guitartist reading this thread will have eyes glazing over, particularly with the above comments, so I promise I won't write any more technical stuff.
Best wishes with your endeavours................pity we don't live closer together!

Short message as on my mobile. Great tips Trooperman. Got that! Having said that I shall still keep trying for that elusive wide neck Strat!! Take care.

Hi All (again),
Thought I might ask again (you never know) if anyone has come across a wide fretboard Fender Strat? Also, anyone got any thoughts about Epiphone Casino? Also, any blues guitar teachers arrived in the Velez Malaga/Vinuela area recently?

Thank you guys.
