 How long's a piece of string? :? There's pluses and minuses on both sides but I always reckon Aesthetics are the most important consideration; PVC frame sections are very "clumpy" compared to wood and aluminium but apart from that it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other,PVC is usually a tad cheaper however.

Best in what way?
Both are virtually maintenance-free.
uPVC is usually cheaper.
uPVC has better insulating qualities.
The production of uPVC products causes high environmental pollution.
Aluminium is stronger and longer-lasting.

PVCu is probably the best in the long run. The frames tend to be a bit thicker than Aluminium, but their maintenance free finish is a bonus.
If you are going for DG to insulate in the winter then insist on a LowE glass like Pilkington `K` or a softcoat glass, these units are 60% more efficient than normal sealed units

Does the sun/heat have any effect on the PVC?

Not at all, PVCu will expand/contract when there is a variation in temp. but the tolerances built in to the system will allow for this.
As long as you go for a reputable window system (Plastmo, Rehau, Kommerling etc) , there should be no discolouration issues.

There are many different grades of uPVC. The lower/cheaper grades will yellow in the sunlight. The last lot we had put in was deliberately expensive. The company owner made a big thing about "only using the best quality". And he was right, apart from the letter-box surround. After 2 years it was a cream colour when the rest of the door was still white.

That`s not unusual, the letterplate surround is injection moulded whereas the rest of the system is extruded, for this reason we only use Black letterplate surrounds!
