Yes, Nevada Smith, I was hoping that the pop stats for those villages would show how many people left following the filoxera disaster ... and the Malaga website does not include such figures

try www.ine.es ,the Spanish national statistics site. I don't know if it will have what you want, but loads of interesting info. You can look up registered population figures onthe padron of each yown hall, with breakdowns into nationalities, ages, and sex. quite an eye opener when you find villages with very few brits registered yet loads permanently living there!

I have tried ine historia section ... it quotes 6 different period 'yearbooks' eg 1866-1867 and gives me a long list of contents including 'population' but every time I click on the subject it just flicks back to the contents page! ?any suggestions?
and am waiting for Nevada Smith to show me up for being so dumb!

have just been reading a PDF file using Acrobat Reader 'el sector primario andaluz en el siglo XX' .. which includes statistics re vine industry before and after filoxera .. graph on page 69 re Malaga says it all .. so I can find out what happened to the grapes/economy but not what happened to the people/workers!
the filoxera struck in the Axarquia Baja, Malaga Province in 1885 ... the villages most affected were those I listed in my first post ... so am looking for population figures before and after that year ... I know they must exist because I found similar figures in a book about the villages of the Sierras Tejeda and Almijara but those pueblos were not so badly affected as vines were not their only income/produce .. bad enough but not as devasting as where vines were the only source of income.
