something different and unusual required for dinner!

Postby olive » Thu Jul 25, 2013 9:12 pm

I have six hungry male friends visiting in eight weeks time on their annual long weekend visit.

I am running out of different unusual evening meal ideas.

We have plenty of space and can even construct something for the occasion.. Has anyone got any ideas for something different please? Diner participation prior or during isn't a problem.

Some ideas i have had.

Spit roast half a pig or wild boar maybe over an open fire made from olive wood. We have a huge amount of that.

Slow cook a large piece of meat in a fire pit (hole in the ground full of fire that has died down and then wrap and bury the meat for the whole day) .

Cook a whole salmon somehow. haven't a fish kettle.

We have a tagine but not big enough for eight. Got a couple of large paella pans but that is lunchtime really.

Any suggestions please?

PS My fallback is chotto so you can see how I need a few ideas!

I like the pig idea ,roasting is something the men can participate in.

What would be unusual is a road kill barbecue!

"What would be unusual is a road kill barbecue!"

Make sure you cook it thoroughly..............did one(rabbit) many years ago and was sick for a week.............
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

We have a paella one lunchtime. Nice but not unusual anymore.

Roadkill? Only thing I ever see is flat snakes. Only any good for making belts.

Any more ideas please?

Instead of one main course what about a series of tapas type courses, this way you can cover many of the interesting and delicious regional dishes accompanied by a good selection of wines.
I would suggest alternating hot-cold-hot etc., this way many of the dishes can be prepared in advance and it makes the evening more interesting, add plenty of rice and french fries etc., always goes down well !
They will go away and tell their families...Wow we had 10, 12 ,15 courses....very memorable and not that difficult to prepare.

Gordon

Never tried it but I understand you can cook a whole salmon in a dishwasher.
See http://www.winexmagazine.com/index.php/ ... er-salmon/ and

White gazpacho is really refreshing. Very old Spanish, before tomatoes arrived here. I had some at a communion recently and it was delicious. Check out High Fearnley Whittenstall's (?) recipe in the Guardian.

I'm a bloke and I'm hungry.
What shall I have?
Cold soup or roast pig with crackling?
I'll have to think about that one. :)
