Sliced Ham (not Jamon)
Sliced Ham (not Jamon)
Ham (not Jamon).
Have tried the supermarket offerings ( Mercadona and Lidl for example) and not overly impressed. Currently got some off the bone but prepackaged , from Mercadona."Noel Lacon" It isn't too bad but was cut with all the expertise of a six year old.
I think it was Sid (apologies if it wasn't) on another thread that said you can get quite good ham now. Is that from independent butchers or a supermarket chain?

We have had it in the past from Carrefour at Centro Commercial Rincon
Re: Sliced Ham (not Jamon)
They do another sort as well. Really tasty and cut chunkily . In Mercadona but not Noel.
Re: Sliced Ham (not Jamon)
For thinly sliced ham, Aldi do one. Just called jamon cocido extra. Its 1.79 a pack. For sandwiches it's nice, it's dry, which is one up on most prepackaged ham and they also do a smoked version. I Like ham with no fat on, and have looked at lacon but it always has lots of fat in it.
Supersol used to do one which they sliced for you, but I haven't been in there for ages so don't know if it's still there.
By the way, the new supermarket in Velez has two sorts of Wensleydale with fruit. It's where Mas used to be and is called Maskompra although it's nothing to do with Mas

Olive,
Have you tried Dia in Loja, we had some ham from them a few months ago and it was OK, we had almost stopped shopping at Dia because of 'poor standards' with service and stock availability, but they seem to have got their act together lately...

Gordon

Re: Sliced Ham (not Jamon)
Best "none Serrano" ham we've had in Spain is called Jamón braseado. A local bar sells it and I've seen it for sale in the big ham shop in Torre amongst other outlets. It is cut on the usual Serrano stand but is without the bone. A row of stitches are there as a tell tale to it being removed.
Very similar to a quality British York ham or similar with that excellent quality boiled ham taste.

Yes, I recommended smoked Westphalian ham on the bone. I have only seen it in independent butchers, but some top end supermarkets like El Corte Ingles may do it.
For sliced, packaged ham, the best I have tasted is the Lidl premium brand.

Re: Sliced Ham (not Jamon)
Ham is the same as we know, more or less, jamon tends to be the dried cured stuff you see legs of hanging in supermarkets (jamon serrano), and is more expensive. The ham is often called jamon tho', just to confuse the issue, as in jamon cocida extra

Re: Sliced Ham (not Jamon)
Jamon york is like our UK sliced ham in a packet. Serrano is different.
Re: Sliced Ham (not Jamon)
In Mercadona look for the Lacon. It is in chunks but lovely flavour. I buy gammon joints from Martin the English butcher and cook my own by far the best.

Re: Sliced Ham (not Jamon)
I think we all know that, but if you ask for "jamón" anywhere in Spain you will be given air dried, cured raw ham. If you want any other sort you must ask for exactly what you want. If we want cooked ham on the bone we ask for "jamón natur".

Not a fan of the expensive Jamon Iberico or Serrano. I like what is called Jamon York here. I buy one in Aldi which is less watery and more similar to the type which can be bought in the UK

If you can find it, usually only in a Deli I'd recommend Westphalian ham on the bone, very nice slightly smokey taste

If I ask for un bocadillo con jamon y queso I get a sandwich with sliced cheese and sliced ham, here you have to specify curado or Serrano, but this is Gran Canaria !!

Traditionally, by definition, York ham should be prepared within 2 miles of york and smoked over oak sawdust, just sayinmarkwilding wrote:Not a fan of the expensive Jamon Iberico or Serrano. There are many different examples of this including Paella. Spaniards, especially people from Valencia, have complained that not using the traditional recipe means it should be call rice with...
