You are what you eat.

Re: Junk food
It's a very rare occasion, maybe once a month, I don't live like a monk
Re: Junk food
A homemade burger made with lean minced beef can be very healthy. Its the rubbish that gets added that isnt, but, sometimes that is what is quite nice about a burger!
Re: Junk food
I don't think most doctors or nutritionists would agree with that statementcostakid wrote:Some burgers can be very healthy.
If you mean that some are not as bad as others, that's fair enough, but even the lean mince ones have 10 to 15% of saturated fat in them, so hardly healthy.
Re: Junk food
I mean homemade, no fat, no junk. I dont very often eat beef but do occasionally like to make a burger. I dont mince but finely chop lean beef.

Re: Junk food
I disagree with that. Everything is only as good as the ingredients.gerrynag wrote:I don't think most doctors or nutritionists would agree with that statementcostakid wrote:Some burgers can be very healthy.

Re: Junk food
Exactly . But, as I said, burgers do contain a lot of saturated fat, even ones made with leaner meat.
The Mediterranean diet, which is meant to be the most healthy diet, does not normally contain burgers

Re: Junk food
My lean mince is 5% fat. That's a lot less than most Vegan ready meals!

Don't see any harm in having one. Not keen myself but if Grandson is here I have bought the angus beef ones and OH usually has one. Can't see any difference from making meatballs or cottage pie etc. All meats have similar fat levels, I think lamb, my preference is the highest. A lot of fat comes out during cooking. Probably all the sauces, chips etc. on the side which add up as on it's own the calorie count is not high. All the main supermarkets here sell 5% mince but my favourite local butcher doesn't. He has low fat pate but bought in.
I believe anything is ok in moderation, best to cut down on quantity. All the family are slim, the heaviest is my Daughter and she is a veggie.

Re: Junk food
Yes, but the mince is saturated fat, whereas the Vegan meal would be mainly unsaturated fat.ashtondav wrote:My lean mince is 5% fat. That's a lot less than most Vegan ready meals!
There is nothing wrong with fat, if it is the right type.
Re: Junk food
The media taps all the time about Burgers McDonalds etc but never mention gourmet food. Watched Rick Stein on weekend away. Usually hate cookery programmes but he was in Vienna and I loved the food there. Amazing the amount of butter used in every dish. Not a mention of healthy food. Have to say every meal looked delicious, more than I can say for the crap trendy stuff shown by some chefs. Brother spent a season in Vienna and we visited. coffee and chocolate cake yummy, not to mention the Schnitzel. ( he was quite chubby checked when he came back. Lots of great traditional restaurants there but the food makes burgers look like a lettuce diet

Re: Junk food
The problem with using really lean beef in a burger is that the texture is all wrong without a decent amount of fat. A burger made from fillet steak would not be the best! Better to chop it and have it as Steak Tartare.

Re: Junk food
Given some of the posts in this thread perhaps we should add the word 'Gourmandism' to the title of this topic.
Re: Junk food
Jamie Oliver has a burger recipe in one of his books. My wife makes them, healthy and absolutely lovely.
