Seeking a reliable source of smoked Haddock or even Cod without an hour trek lets say Torre del Mar to Nerja.

Very difficult to find - smoked or not. The Spanish don't eat Haddock for some strange reason. We trek down to Iceland in Fuengirola. if anyone comes up with an alternative I will be there in a flash!

I’ve not seen it there, but their stock changes so maybe.

Russel's very occasionally, and when they do it is poor quality in my opinion.
They have Kippers though, tons of Kippers.

I buy smoked mackerel which is more available here, in Russells and some other Scandi shops around here.

I used to get it at an English shop in Nerja but I think he's long gone. Iranzo may have it in Nerja, they have most things. A fish pie isn't the same without it!

It's so expensive, if you can find it, that I use smoked salmon instead of smoked haddock in the fish pie. The last lot of SH I got from Iceland was the best I have tasted. Incidentally, if you keep smoked mackerel in the freezer too long it can go rancid surprisingly quickly.

I have kept mackerel frozen for a long time, probably at least 6 months without any incident. It does get a bit frost bitten looking but I make it into paté and it's been fine (so far!).

It depends on how long it has been around in the shop before you freeze it. In Spain that could be a long time! It caught me out once and nearly ruined a fish pie. Always worth tasting it before you put it in with the rest of the fish. I have had the same with vac packed salami.

The fillets I buy are shrink wrapped with a fairly long sell by date. A good idea to test it first though as you say. I think Russell's has quite a good turn around with it so it doesn't stay in the shop too long. Their taramasalata always seems to sell out so there's obviously quite a market for that kind of thing!

I love Taramasalata but I don’t trust the fabricated stuff. It can be a bit like fish flavoured Angel Delight! I have made my own but if you think finding smoked haddock is difficult, try finding smoked roe!

Being smart I thought I'll try Arkwright's, which is where I got some first class fish last time, but I'll try the web first. "Sorry rebuilding our site" etc. dunno now it's a good hike from Torrox for no stock, and there is the radar trap that got me last time :)

Not this week though

You could always combine it with a curry buffet while you are there, it´d mean it wouldn´t be a wasted trip
