Spanish Wine

Postby country boy » Fri Jun 23, 2006 10:57 pm

:( Spanish Wine
I hear on the radio that Spain is very likely going to get told by the EU to cut it's production of mediocre wines. ( Which understandably is not going down too well).
Does anyone agree with me that the majority of Spanish Wine is very sameish, and that, bearing in mind that there is a 12 month "Wine Lake" now within the EU, it might not be a bad Idea if some Bodegas tried to go a little "Up Market".?

What! I'm quite happy with my Monte Ducay Crianza 2003, €1.99 a bottle from Mercadona! Very very drinkable. Hic.

My friends ´love´ the wine in a carton for about 60cents romthe village shop, so 1.99€ is really upmarket! :D

It also costs the EU 500 million pounds each year to convert surplus wine for industrial use! Also stated that new world wines are increasing their share of the market.

Wouldn't pay much for any spanish wine and faced with drinking it from a carton I would stop drinking. Did get some decent Australian wine for about 2.79 euros from Liddl. If I want something special I buy French or the odd Italian.

:? Evidently they get paid the same subsidy regardless of what wine is produced..ipso facto...the more the acreage, the more the hand-out, even if what you produce is little better than vinegar...doesn't seem right to me...there must be some quality control. Also if they can't sell it...even at 60 centimos a litre, then it should be un-supported. (OOOh..I could just go a bottle of Chateau Neuf Du Pape). :)

There are many decent Spanish wines, Faustino is one of them and, some wine snobs may disagree but in my opinion the Freixenet Cordon Negra is comparable to many Champagnes.

Gus, sorry for that slip, that should, of course read "Cordon Negro"

You don't have to pay a lot of money to get a good Spanish wine, a Faustino Reserva was the 1st Spanish wine I ever tasted and hated it so much it was about 4 years before I would try Spanish wines again! and it's not that I don't appreciate good wines, my favourite is an Italian Barolo

Yes, you're right, a good Spanish wind can be traced immediately after a mediocre bottle of "Cava"

Try one of these good Spanish wines
Duratón Syrah 2000, Cardenal Cisneros Pedro Ximénez, L´Ermita 97, Cirsion 99 and Selección Especial de Abadía Retuerta.
then judge

Nice choice Silver!

The L'Ermita is a cracker at only 397 Euros, on the other hand you could get a Magnum of Vega Sicilia for a mere 300. :D

Seriously though, Spain has some superb wines (I am slowly working through them  ).

There are many wines which can equal or exceed what the French can make and usually at a better price.

There are far more grape varieties used in Spain than in any other country which gives a greater variety of taste in the resulting wines.

The best price vs quality can be found between 5 - 10 euros. You will be lucky to get a good wine under 5 euros but that applies in France as well.

Ultimately it's what you like that counts.

Would agree with Sid,
There are many wines which can equal or exceed what the French can make and usually at a better price.
The French wine industry is having serious problems with falling sales due to the French drinking less and increased competition from the rest of the world. I have thought for a long time that cent for cent red Spanish wines outperform French ones.

I am now guessing that you rely, like me, on the wonderful Guia Peñin de los Vinos de España.

I am slowly working through it - only 9816 different wines left to try!
