We are moving to Granada about this time next year (from NZ) to live and work (I am a lawyer and husband is engineer) and we have two girls who will be nearly 12 and 10 by then. I have been doing some research and see that there are some schools that offer a bi-lingual schooling as well as the "integrated" schools. I don't know if they are the same. I understand that integrated schools do some lessons in English and cost about E700 per year. We will not be able to afford a full private school and to be honest would prefer them to get more involved with Spanish life through a state school. If we could get them into a school which offered them some English teaching as well it would be great. They are already learning Spanish (and doing quite well!).
Can anybody shed any more light on the schools in Granada city? From my research it appears that we have to register but cannot get any further than that. Does anyone know if we have to write to the school or do we have to wait and do it in person? Are schools zoned?
We know the area pretty well - I lived there 20 years ago. Oh and we are English (EU citizens), well my husband is a Kiwi.
Sorry for all the questions!!!!
Thanks
Schools in Granada - integrated? bi-lingual?
My children aged 6 and 8 go to a bilingual school in the north of Granada called Granada college in el pantano de cubillas. This is private (about 4000 euros per year each) but well worth it. Half the lessons are in English and half in Spanish, with native speakers for both. Currently there are about 600 pupils from 3 to 18 and only a handful of pupils are foreigners so integration into Spanish life isn't a problem. Previously my children went to a little village school but this failed them in both Spanish and English. The school day is longer (9.30 til 5.15) but they get a cooked lunch.
I believe that many schools claim to be bilingual because they have a few hours of English per week but very few are actually equally in 2 languages.
