Vuelta 2017
Vuelta 2017
any tips for places at the side of the road to watch the race go by? where's the finish line going to be in sierra Nevada? ideally looking for a café/bar on a steep climb towards the finish.... any local knowledge would be appreciated
Re: Vuelta 2017
I guess at least when it is a steep climb you get to see them. When La Vuelta came to Estepona a couple of years ago on the flat they were just a blur!

We have watched it twice East of Malaga on the flat. 1 hour build up with road blocks etc and all over from start to finish in about 90 seconds. Great atmosphere though.

There are usually more police motorcycles than cyclists! It's certainly worth watching.

Always like to see it if we can but it's always on the flat around here so they whizz by. We watch it on TDP on Spanish TV in the afternoons then the ITV4 version in the evening as well!
We have seen the Tour de France as well and their build up and caravan before the cyclists arrive is a much bigger affair but we waited for hours to see them go by. Here they are pretty good at closing the roads at the last minute and opening them again after it has passed by.

The Vuelta website gives good info: http://www.lavuelta.com/la-vuelta/2017/us/#
Contains a surprisingly interesting description of the Geology that the riders will ignore as they speed past for each stage.

Does the Vuelta attract many roadside spectators or don't the locals take much notice.

I watched part of it in Torre del Mar last year.
I would say that majority of the spectators were locals.

I wasn't aware that it was down here last year.

OK perhaps it was the year before, but it, or some major cycle race, was here sometime. I'm not really into cycle racing but thought it might be worth a look.
Wicksey,s photo earlier in this thread was as it came past the El Ingenio complex.
The stage through Torre del Mar came from the La Vinuela direction, not, as this years one is, from your way.
Cheers

Yes that was 2015 Gerry. As you say it was coming down from the north on that day. Next week's stage will end up in Antequera after coming along the coast here.

Re: Vuelta 2017
So, what is it like from a spectators point of view? Do you just wander down to any point on the N340 10 minutes before they come through or do you need to (like the French) pitch a tent the night before?

Re: Vuelta 2017
Certainly when I saw it TWO years ago you could just turn up a few minutes before it was due depending where you want to see it. Most of the section in our area is flat so not so popular viewing. The just whizz past in a few minutes.
It was late due to them not keeping up the estimated pace. Had to buy a glass of wine to occupy the time while I was waiting.

Re: Vuelta 2017
Hi,
Only on the popular climbs would you need to get in a viewing position early or even the day before.
When it came fairly close some years ago, I rode up to a view point and saw about 30seconds of a strung out bunch pass before they went on to contest a sprint in the town, another year watched them coming up climb so had about 1k of viewing. Its best to follow on Eurosport.
