Hospital Comarcal - good? Or go Private?

Postby fearless nige » Sun Aug 11, 2019 6:18 am

My partner has to have a small procedure to have a growth cut out just above his eye at the Hospital Comarcal in Velez/Torre del Mar. I have heard various tales about things not being so great at this hospital, and since the appointment was made it has got larger, so we are considering going Private based on those fears plus the need to have it removed asap. The growth appears to be cancerous. The 'specialist' who made the appointment took one look at the small growth and said it had to be cut out - no biopsy etc - is that normal?

Any recommendations for who to go to in the area to have it removed? We are based in Torrox.

Thanks in advance.

There is a good dermatologist at Clinica Rincon in Nerja.

I have seen the dermatologist in Hospital Comarcal and was very pleased and impressed by him.
I went to him because I was not impressed by the dermatologist at Clinica Rincon in Rincon.
Cheers

My wife has just had a major emergency operation there and was impressed (not easy) by her treatment during the week of her stay so much so that she (I) bought chocolates for the nurses on her discharge.

My wife has been using Comarcal for many years, mainly for cancer diagnosis and treatment, and has experienced nothing but the finest treatment.
Their diagnostic equipment is all bang up to date and, unlike the UK, never put cost first. MRI and CT scans are carried out as routine, and results are delivered quickly.
If they remove any small growth, a biopsy is carried out afterwards as a matter of course.
If you go private, you may get operated on slightly quicker, but if you need ongoing treatment should it prove to be cancerous, the cost of private treatment is horrendous.

Far better to use Comarcal to start with, you will then be in the system for ongoing treatment.

And incidently, many of the private consultants at Rincon actualy work at Comarcal.
Hardworking resident !!

Lovely hospital. Cleanliness brilliant and staff very caring. I was in hospital for 4 days and have nothing but praise for the service and care. My husband also in there for 2 weeks whilst waiting to be transferred to Malaga. Again nothing but praise.

Yes, the Comarcal is very good, but of course, getting appointments and subsequent surgery is going to take some time.

If you go private, the whole thing will be dealt with in days not months. If any aftercare or further treatment is necessary, go to your GP and they will sort it out. My wife has had 5 bits dug out over the years. They were all technically cancerous but non malignant. Only the biopsy can tell the difference.

I have been using both private and NHS systems in tandem for years with no problems.

My husband and I have both had our gallbladders out at Hospital Comarcal and the care was excellent. If you decide to go private, Dr Veeger at Centro Mar y Salud in El Morche can refer you to a very good dermatologist. Here is her website (she speaks perfect English) https://centromarysalud.com/

Do these folks deal with insurance companies. Could see anything from a quick peruse of their website. Fed up with Clinica Rincon and looking for an alternative.

It's the cuadro medico of your insurance company you would need to check, surely, to see which clinics/doctors are included?

Normally clinics have a list of insurance companies that they work with on their website. Far easier than trying to navigate DKVs website. In this instance as i said didn't see any such list.

None that I have heard of. Bernadette is Dutch so one of them is for Dutch nationals. We always used her before we were accepted onto the NHS here but just on a PAYG basis. She charges between 30 and 45€ for a consultation. I still see her from time to time as I cannot get all the blood tests I want on the NHS.

Thanks Wicksey. Doesn't appear that they work with any of the mainstream insurers..

Just spent the morning/afternoon at the hospital. Just a heads up if anyone has an appointment soon that they have staff on the door checking your appointment time and telling you to only enter literally mins before it is due inorder to keep the amount of ppl inside down Lots of ppl hanging around outside instead. If we had known we wouldnt have got there early, inorder to park up and find the department. Once inside we got seen an hour after our appointment slot. Lots of ppl sat around looking fed up and lots of ppl who either didnt turn up or left before, going by the names that were getting called but never answered.

It was a rearranged appointment cancelled from may so i guess theres a backlog. Family member went for a cortisone injection.is this not possible at the G.P as seems a waste for all having to go to the hospital for it.

I have had several growths removed at various clinics and hospitals. I cannot comment on Hospital Comercal as I have not had surgery there. But the procedure is always the same. The dermatologist decides the tumour needs surgical removal. You have the op and the biopsy is sent to the laboratory who carry out histology on the specimen and declare it to be malignant or benign and if malignant whether there has been sufficient surrounding normal tissue (usually 1cm) removed to ensure that the surgery has ben successful.
