I have been entitled to the Spanish Health Care System for the past 2 years as a beneficiary of my OH's S1. Previous to that we were both covered for a few years by some law that granted us the right to it as long term residents...something that came about a few years back??
Now that I am 'of age' and entitled to my own S1 do I need to apply and register it with the INSS? Or, with the previous history do I need to bother? Want to get things right....what with all the new rules.

You do not need to, but in these uncertain times it makes sense to register in your own right.
Its very easy and you don't even get a new card. Make an appointment online at your nearest INSS office and take your S1 with you and with your residency documents etc.

And if your other half dies and you are piggy backing off his healthcare theres been lots of stories of the surviving spouse losing their right to health care.
