Great tip, thanks Just a little disappointed he chose Marbella and not Torremolinos - he could have picked one of my favourites, The Drifters by James Michener, and one of my favourite quotes: "Wandering through Torremolinos by night is like touring a sewer in a glass-bottom boat."
Slightly ashamed to admit I've never read I Stepped Out One Midsummer Morning, but have just ordered it, as well as Pictures from Italy, which has also somehow slipped by me.
Anyone have any other recommended reading of this genre?

Ther are three books in Laurie Lee's autobiographical story:

Cider With Rosie; As I walked out One Midsummer Morning; and A Moment of War.

The first has little if no connection with Andalucia, but the last memoir, albeit short, is a reminder of all that was truly awful about the Spanish civil war.

Thanks Trooperman, I've ordered Moments of War as well now. I recently read Orwell's Homage to Catalunya, so that should be a good one to continue the theme

Orwell's is, in my opinion, a strange book. It really focusses on the chaos of war and, in this particular case, the futility engendered by opposing political dogma. I've not researched it, but I suspect that Ken Loach's film "Land and Freedom" took some of that futility as a base where political correctness was more important than pure ideology. If you want a feel for that film, a visit to the village of Mirambel (where much of the film was shot) is in order.
