English Cinema in Malaga/Nerja area

Postby Beachdragon » Mon Aug 14, 2006 11:30 am

Can anyone tell me if there is a cinema that shows English speaking films In Malaga or Nerja area? My son is 13 and loves films I think he would be happier about moving if he knew he could get to the cinema

The multiplex cinema at the El Ingenio shopping centre on the road between Torre del Mar and Velez-Malaga (right next to the motorway exit for Torre/Velez-Malaga), which is about a 15 minute drive from Nerja, shows one film in English every week.

There is also a bowling alley in the complex and an Aquapark directly opposite (Aquapark only open in high season, mid June to September), and a go-karting track a short distance from Torre del Mar along the coast road in the direction of Malaga, which your son might enjoy.

Blimey, you've got your hands full there! I don't have any children myself so I'm not all that well up on facilities in the surrounding area but I will be speaking to some English friends in Velez tonight or tomorrow hopefully so will ask them about soft play areas and let you know. They have 2 children of 8 and 6 (I think that's their ages anyway) who go to Spanish state school in Velez.

Things for kids to do don't tend to register too much on my radar, about the only other thing I've noticed that might appeal to boys are a couple of 'model shops' in Torre del Mar which have huge Scalextrix setups that you can pay to use - I think about half a dozen people at a time can play 'races' - and Ive seen as many adults as kids using them!

As you said you're looking at areas to rent near to the coast but not so expensive as Nerja, Velez-Malaga might be worth a look. It's 5 minutes from the motorway exit and a 10 minute drive to the coast at Torre del Mar. Torre del Mar property is expensive as many Spanish people have second homes there but Velez is cheaper. There are modern urbanisations on the outskirts and a historic centre (which is where my house is but not particularly good for children as not many town houses have gardens). There is more property for rent on a long term basis than there tends to be on the coast, where short term tourist rentals are the norm. Facilities are very good, main regional hospital is there, plus a modern health centre in the centre of town, loads of shops, good public sports facilites including an indoor swimming pool which can be used all year round, excellent public transport including a tram service to Torre del Mar which is due to start running next month).

English cinema

:? Picking up on this very late but don't know where else to grumble.
No English films at El Ingenio since I don't know when, in spite of pleas to said place.
Delighted to see them at Bauhaus Cinema Malaga went to see Casino Royale but lo and behold none this week - unless miss print in Town Crier.
It's no wonder they're not supported as the occurrence is too sporadic for anyone to make plans.

Plaza Mayor, Malaga, near the airport, always has 2 or 3 English films on, and usually you have the place to yourself - except when Da Vinci Code was on!
Don't worry about what people think, they don't do it very often

There is usually a film in English at the Nerja Cultural Centre in C/Granada every 3 or 4 weeks, usually on a Tuesday. When one is planned they post details on their window. I have not seen them advertise it anywhere else. Usually they are reasonably new releases too. If I see one advertised when I pass this week I will let you know.

Beachdragon, i am not having a go at you but why don't you take them to see some films that they have seen before but in Spanish, its amazing how quick kids will pick up the lingo when its linked to something they can relate to.

thanks for every ones help and costakid, i agree with you that it is good to take the kids to see films in Spanish. my 14 year old was thrilled at school as he got to spend all day watching films like Lord of the Rings in Spanish! he said it did help to learn the lingo and the Spanish teachers obviously agree with your way of thinking! and to be honest since moving to Spain i haven't had time to think about the cinema, we re too busy down the beach! :D

Beachdragon, there is a film in English at the Nerja Cultural Centre on Tuesday 6th March at 7pm. It is the comedy / drama 'The Devil Wears Prada' with Meryl Streep. Not sure if it is the sort of thing your teenagers would like but is supposed to be pretty funny??

Beach dragon: I thought I was the only mad one on here! 6 kids?! You got no TV either!!

Plaza Major is brill for a day out with the kids. We go on their Birthdays and at Christmas as a treat-otherwise it is quite expensive!

You can catch a film in English, have a maccy d's, BK, KFC etc, ice-cream afterwards, walk round the shops and then on to Big Fun where they can spend some birthday cash! Adults can totter off to a bar (although the prices for alcohol here are not your usual Spanish prices!).

Went to see 'Chicago' in English at El Ingenio a couple of years ago.

I was the only person in the cinema.

Probably why they don't bother anymore.
