Motorhome Matriculation & Homologation!!?
Motorhome Matriculation & Homologation!!?
Just heard about this and as we're leaving in about 4 weeks time with our small german-built lhd hymer campervan it's a bit of a worry. I'm told it costs about 1400 euros to get this "certificate of European conformity", not to mention all the other cost of matriculation ... can anybody shed some light on it for me? This is turning into a nightmare!!

Its 12% of the value of the van, but if you have registered it in Uk, and you plan to travel back to UK, you could just MOT it whilst there
No soporto ver la casa sucia, ahora mismo me levanto y apago la luz.

It's got nothing to do with a UK MOT.
A Certificate of Conformity can cost a lot of money and this will be on top f the matriculation tax (which is no longer 12% but depends on CO2 emissions and can be up to 14.75%).

I assume you are in the UK and are moving to Spain?
If your motorhome is of recent construction then it should have a homologation certificate with it.
Hymer will probably issue you with a new one if you haven't got it.
My Italian built motorhome was made before homologation certificates where common.
Just needed an inspection by an inspector from traffico in Malaga and then a special ITV where they checked the usual plus all the dimensions to see if they agreed with the inspectors measurements.
Also checked that the headlights had been changed and that the reversing lights and rear fog lights where on the correct side.
Everything was handled by a gestor who specialises in car transfers etc.
All cost about €1000.
Cheers

Hi Gerry
Yes, moving from the UK to Competa. It's not new it's 1993 so that's why I guess I don't have one. I have emailed Hymer to see if they can help but time's running away with us at the minute. When you say about 1000euros did that cover the cost of everything, including getting new Spanish plates ITV and whatever else you need? If so do youk know of such a gestor in our area?
I really appreciate your help Gerry.

Hi Kim
Mine is a 1995 motorhome so costs will probably be similar.
Around €1000 for everything.
One thing to be aware of that not many insurance companies will insure motorhomes.
I will let you have the name of the company I use. Need to look at the documents in my motorhome.
Also insurance companies, generally, will only insure a vehicle older than 10 years for third party risks, you will not get comprehensive insurance.
Cheers

Devils's Advocoate ..thank you so much I will certainly try her
Gerry... that would be great and 1000euros seems infinitely better than the scary scenarios I was getting. I would appreciate the details of your insurance company too.
It's wonderful to find people so helpful ... thank you all.

After much "toing" and "froing" with Hymer, I've found that vehicles before the year 2000 wouldn't have had one of these Conformity certificate. They can, however, send me some technical spec sheets at a cost of £150. The snags being (a) they're in German and (b) will they help? Does anyone know or can help me?
Gerryh ... can you let me have the name of your insurer as we're leaving on Friday .. yippeeeeeeeeee!!!

Re: Motorhome Matriculation & Homologation!!?
We tried to get our 2005 motor home made legal in Spain but were told that because the habitation door was on the wrong side, as it opened on to the road then they couldn't register it! We kept it taxed in our garden when not on the road and last year drove back to UK to get it MOT. This year we were planning to do the same but managed to sell our villa last month so are now doing what we like best and that is on a camp site on the Algarve on our way back to blighty!!
Re: Motorhome Matriculation & Homologation!!?
If its right-hand drive you won't be able to register it in Spain.
Re: Motorhome Matriculation & Homologation!!?
Hi Liz You are correct in a way but some motor homes such as Hymers have the door on the same side as the driver but ours is a Swift (UK make) and they tend to have the door on the opposite side to the driver!

Sorry for the delay in replying, lost my internet connection
for a while.
Have a look at https://www.zalba-caldu.com/index.html
It's all in Spanish but fairly easy to navigate.
If you phone them or email them you can get English replies.
Cheers

Hi Gerry
Thanks for that, we made the journey and are now happily ensconced on the side of a mountain near Competa, just about to get blown away I think... still, beats the view we had in the UK hands down! Just need to find someone to help me get it on Spanish plates now
Cheers and enjoy the better weather over the weekend!

Re: Motorhome Matriculation & Homologation!!?
Re Certificate of homologation. I suggest that when you get it, get it in Spanish. It is a standard European form so the authorities are SUPPOSED to accept it, but when I transferred my bike the ITV station at Algorrobo refused to accept the English version so I had to get a separate inspection.
As I say, they are supposed to accept the English version, but what can you do? Isit worth the hassle of taking the leagl route to get it recognised? easier to go with the flow and get it done. Probably cheaper in the ong run too.

I've got an inferiority complex, but it's not a very good one!
