they did for my dad, and for me - and i had two passports - the expired one (number associated with my NIE on their computer) and my new one, which the policewoman associated with my green "residencia" certificate.

Further queries re n i e : have an n i e obtained n the nineties, on a a 4 size paper and if Im not mistaken began with XN follwed by a series of numbers, I can now no longer locate it should I just apply for a new one or is there some database somewhere with the original details on there and if so how do I obtain them? would t be silly or unproductive just to apply for a new one

Easier to apply for a new one. One problem is that your original NIE application would have included your passport number, which will, by now, have changed. I doubt if you have a note of the number used at the time, I certainly dont. The system cannot cope with number changes as Spanish passports do not change when you renew them.

I have an nie number, but my address at home has changed ("in Ireland) do I need to notify them about that? Also if I was moving would my child need an nie number?

I am sure NIE is for life . Surely address is not important otherwise renters would be potentially changing every 12 months.

You only need to update your address if you have a residence document . Anyone,ie a non resident can have a N.I.E number so you dont have to update anything.

Both you and your child would need to apply for residency. If you dont already have an NIE (your child) they will get one with the residency application. They dont need to apply separately
