Metal Paint

Does anyone know of a good Spanish enamel metal paint? Its coming up to that time when the first week of my holidays will be taken up with House Maintenance and I have to paint the Rejas and Gates. In the past I've used Hammerite but in the Spanish climate that seems to last a year at most before discoloring. Conversely theres some paint on one railing thats lasted years so methinks there must be some superior Spanish brand best suited to the climate.

Ferrorite or other make of esmalte antioxidante
Liso..smooth shiny
Forja..looks like wrought iron
Martele..covers imperfections..look shiny hammered
considered new generation paint no need to undercoat...but any paint shop (not hypermarket)will give advice.

Good point Burro. I used Hammerite a year ago on my gates/bars and they need doing again now.

Try a make called TITANLUX - a very good make that goes on easily and a lot of Spanish seem to use it.

Leroy Merlin have a no name brand of anti-oxidante which is much cheaper than Titanlux. I've bought a can of each to try out & compare. Will try to remember to post results here in a couple of weeks time (if the rain ever stops!)

You can get Hammerite most places in Spain these days; I have great faith in it, it is not cheap though

Me too. I believe it´s manufactured here as well. Any paint will suffer eventually from the excessive summer heat.

I have use hammerite in spain and it lasted a year if that, although it was good when used in the uk, must be the heat

I've used hammerite extensively in the UK and swear by it but it definately doesn't like the Spanish sun so I'll look out for the alternatives and let you know how it goes.

What was your opinion of the anti-oxidente paint you bought from Merlins a while ago? Have a lot of metal to coat up and Hammerite is rubbish out here.

I also used Hammerite on some outside railings in Spain, about a year ago, it was very difficult to put on, I also used some metal paint from our local store on some other railings and found it much better, easy to apply and still looks good.

Smoothrite is what I use. It's by Hammerite but without the hammer finish.
Its qualities are silkier than Hammerite and it goes on like a dream.
I use it on all my engine blocks which get more stick than any railings
Have used it in spain on the rejas and it's perfect.

Benidorm, it is good stuff and as I say a different thing altogether from the normal hammerite.

Here's a link to a supplier in the UK to give you an idea of the colours etc.
I've actually seen more colours than they seem to stock.
Shop around though, as the price for the same thing varies so much......you can pick it up very cheaply.

use any old normal gloss paint, thats what the spanish use.

I used Titanlux - it said "esmalte sintetico" on the tin. This was to paint
the outside metal railing on the stairs up to my office. Here's a picture of the tin

The key is preparation. First job was to wire-brush all the old paint off,
right down to the metal. I used a circular brush attached to a power drill.
Next is a good coat of primer (the tin on the left). This seems to come in either grey or red.
I used red, but I doubt that it matters much unless your top colour is
white (then use grey undercoat).

After that came the top coat.

Total time: about 16 hours of work - about 2 of which was the final
painting, prep and undercoat took the vast majority of the time.

wire brush...those were the days !!!
there are now excellent brush on gels that get rid of the rust in seconds leaving the bare metal ready to be painted

Do you really have to go back to bare metal before repainting? I thought I could just wire brush the bad bits and then slap some paint on.
