Walkable skylights/good window company?

Postby blondie » Wed Feb 23, 2011 9:02 am

Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a good window company? Also is it possible to have skylights which are safe to walk on?

As mentioned in another thread this week we have these disgusting domes plastic skylights which stand pround of the flat roof....and we were wondering if it was possible to just have level skylights with the roof which would be safe to walk on if we were ever to use the roof for extra space?

Thanks!

Load bearing glass such as the walk of faith on the Blackpool and Eifel towers are over 1.5" thick and pre stressed ... they are very heavy and they cost a fortune - Forget it

You could use glass bricks set into a structural framework of inverted mild steel "T" sections set out so each edge of the glass brick is supported on a "T" flange.

Oh! yes they are. Structurally, they are incredibly strong; as long as they are supported adequately.

Pavement lights which are a type of glass block have been around for years!
Some examples of this sort of thing

Thanks again for the great suggestions. Only trouble with the glass blocks - they're not openable like a skylight and therefore we wouldn't be able to ventilate in the summer/winter!

You can get them made of kevlar or similar material, you can't see through them but they are opaque so you would get light.

I imagine the problem would be to seal them to waterproof standards if you want them flush, nothing's impossible, depends on your budget I suppose.

Thanks again for the help guys. I gues we are stuck with these ugly skylights we have, unless we go for glass ones, but which again will not be flush with the floor. Oh to be a billionaire.

Have you considered sunpipes (there are various makes)? They might be a bit less intrusive than what you have?
