tree root problems

Postby gavilan » Wed Oct 19, 2022 4:24 pm

there is a mature bay tree growing adjacent to one part of this house ... I think its' roots are causing cracking in a couple of internal walls ... I can cut it down but how to stop the roots continuing to grow/cause problems? ... (there is a certain irony here ..ie when so many other plants/trees in the garden are struggling for lack of rain/water, this tree has obviously found a source of such!!!) ... advice would be much appreciated

If you want to kill the tree ? Stop the roots growing? There are ways to do it, but it takes time

thats not so easy.

Ive seen people build walls under ground, or putting sheets of steel in the ground. obviously doesnt last for ever, but it will last a few years.

Drill holes in the stump and fill them with full strength Glyphosphate weed killer and cover the stump.. You can still buy Roundup in 500ml or less amounts. Some agricultural local suppliers may sell you 5 litres with asking for a licence.

I buy 5L in the local shop, but I've known the guy for 20 years.

in addittion to tree roots causing cracks in the house, I suspect the drought ie drying out the soil under/around said house might be a contributing factor
